Headed up to Tahoe in couple of weeks, I have a day for rock hounding and it looks like there are some good spots in the books I have, but does anyone have any suggestions? I think I want to try my hand at digging for quartz crystals around Hallelujah Junction, but I am up for anything and love a good hike. If anyone wants to meet-up that would be great too. I have a well appointed 4x4 and a friendly dog I drive, you guide? Beers on me? Looking at August 2. Thanks!

As a child in the 60's, when we were camping and found a gravel road that was close to impassable, my parents called it a "truckee road". Things there have probably changed, but in my experience the likelihood of finding good material increases with the roughness of the roads to get there. 4x4 is a good thing. Wish I had more insight on places to look.

Wow what an invitation! Wish I lived a couple hundred miles closer and knew the area. I’m sure some of our Nor Cal members will chime in on this one….

There’s a ton of stuff up there in books and the internet, and I really do like hiking I think I am going to check out Petersen mountain and dig for some quart crystals.

Be mindful that a bunch of the quartz diggings are under claim. There used to be some fee digs, but I don't know what's going on there now.
Good Luck !

Here is a claims map from BLM's site Looks like there is lots of desert to go around. The blue hashes are closed claims Pink hashes are active. Hopefully I should be okay closer to the CA NV border. I will keep my eye out for claim markers for sure and be respectful of the area. There are also some non-claim non BLM islands that need to be avoided as well.

Well, I did not make it out to Mount Peterson. I couldn’t get a really good handle on where to go and it looked like it was going to be a pretty serious undertaking to find anything good. So I skipped it, but I had a great time hanging out with my friends in Tahoe, I did go to a couple of collecting spots mentioned in one of my rockhound books. I went to Prosser Lake and Boca Reservoir right outside Truckee, but I didn’t find much. Prosser Lake is supposed to have some interesting white and Boca reservoir supposed to have some green Jasper. I think I found one piece of green Jasper, but not too high. I found one teeny tiny white agate. As a consolation prize, I swung by the Little Panoche Creek Reservoir to look for some more Jasper and I got pretty lucky. It looks like they had just bulldozed a firebreak all around the wildlife reserve, and there was some pretty darn good pieces of Jasper exposed. I had seen an earlier report for that area where they said you could drive in. You can no longer drive in but there’s a nice parking lot on one end of the reservoir Dam and you could walk in. It sounds like it’s a pretty darn active hunting place, so if you go, bring something visible to wear. It’s a gorgeous little spot to visit as well. There are some neat geology going on around there for sure.

Ooh and this guy at Prosser lake too. I don’t know what type of rock it is. I don’t think it’s jasper, but it might take a polish…
