I’m brand new to the hobby and completed my first cabochon today: My wonderful (and very patient) teacher guided me through all the trimming, grinding and polishing. He even filled in the natural crack with glue and we polished that as well. I’m not stopping here… I’ve already got my eyes on several other slabs and have started a couple more cabs. But I thought it’d be fun to post this first try!

Very nice! Is it Cherry Creek? That pattern and color are a great looking choice and you did a beautiful job. Now that you have a cab, what will you do with it?

I honestly don’t know if it’s Cherry Creek or really anything about the rock. I selected it based only on pattern and color, so thank you! As for what to do with it, I’ve been thinking about that for a while, especially since I’ll be doing more cabs. I’ve considered: Pendants Earrings Rings Bracelets Napkin Rings Refrigerator Magnets Letter openers But actually making any of those things doesn’t sound more fun than starting another cab. Then finally my wife said: just keep them as they are, you don’t have to do anything with them! So that’s my only plan for now…

Hey great job, looks like you're doing well! It is great to have someone to guide you (I wish I did).
Are you working at a club worrkshop or do you have a machine of your own?

I believe it is cherry creek jasper from china. But I’ve been known to be wrong. Your wife is right, you can just leave them as is It would make for a very beautiful collection. You did an amazing job on your first piece, I can’t wait to see more of your work in the future.

Beautiful cab, especially for a first one.
My first cabochon seems ages ago (2007).
Curious about the details on this one. How big is it? Did you do it by hand, or with a dopstick?
Really good results though.

Looks like a cab!! I do mine by hand on a Genie, too. It’s fun! Welcome from California!

Excellent start and very nice work for the entire group in the first picture. What epoxy did you fill the crack with and did you get such a fine polish on the epoxy?
