Yeah, that placeholder didn't work out, I had the bright idea that I could split it with the trim saw and not cut through the best part of the fire. Got something completely different now, but not going to jinx this one with a teaser. After peak use hours I'll turn the AC back on in the shop hopefully, and get something knocked out. rockbrain the original one I was working on would have been roughly mushroom shaped, so it would have had center line symmetry but a shape I have never seen before so definitely freeform. Look at it this way, unless you have a perfectly matching front and back double dome 2 sided cab, you definitely are asymmetric on the side view. Did the rules say it was on the top view? No, it didn't...

Just went back and reread the guidelines for this. This competition. The one I was going to enter is a rhodochrosite teardrop or egg-shape. I didn't use a template but it came out very symmetrical. Now I see that we are supposed to be asymmetrical.
It is up to miket and tommy to make the call, and my personal opinion is that as long as you don't use a template, it qualifies as a freeform and mathematically it couldn't be strictly "symmetrical" anyway.

Here is my entry for this month. I had no idea what to enter until I grabbed this end cut of pietersite. With all the matrix and soft spots, I knew it was gonna end up being a funky shape lol. It's the first time I've worked pietersite before and it was much harder than expected.

Original rock ready for cutting and preform as it started. I found this on Lake Michigan this summer I think in Petoskey. Best guess on makeup is basalt and feldspar but I could be seriously wrong.
I think the crazy lace will be my entry. I did a couple larimar cabs that ended up having some issues. I did a rhodochrosite that's not asymmetrical and I just decided to not go with it. I have a picture of the slab for this one after the preform was cut out. I did not take a picture beforehand as this was not supposed to be for the competition. I was working on a heart shape. A major part of the point broke off so I did a freeform regrinding of the shape and went from there.

I really like the last pic that shows all the lines coming down to the edge.

My entry for this month. I do not know the name of this material, so if someone does, please chime in. Imperial Jasper I think I picked up at a local rock show last year.
Flat lap and vibe tumbler, had to work back the bottom edge because I ground it too fast....there is the slightest of domes, I swear lol

Okay, here's mine. The freeform shape for this one was decided by a colony of little critters long ago, I just trimmed... I have been slabbing up a bunch of this Florida Coral and preformed out a bunch, this one and the one next to it jumped out at me. This was going to be the practice one for the larger one next to it, but ran out of time chasing other shop issues and whatnot, so this is it. Also, never a good idea to wipe off fingerprints with the same paper towel you used when cleaning off all the mud from grinding off the soft white outside layer. But like I said, I'm up at 4AM tomorrow and doubt I'll even have time for new pics. Slabbette Cab

Here is my freeform entry, it is cut from a piece of sunstone from India. It is hard to tell from the pictures but the piece has some nice aventuresence in the spots of peachy schiller.
Here's my entry. It's a piece of scenic Rocky Butte Jasper I collected at the mine site (with permission) many years ago. Given its shape, it would be hard to cut it as anything but a freeform so I took advantage of its natural design.

Ive done it before. However… I was like, let’s do it. Give you some inspiration. The piece I selected has a gold sheen to it as well. So out in the sun, you can see the sheen and Tri-flow through the clear spots.
