I have a question for you guys, since I've never cut any rocks before. I have a small slab of Vivianite. It's got a pattern on both sides - I can't tell if its apart of the rock or a pattern left by the saw. Does anyone know? I'm showing photos from inside and outside.

Since the lines are all curved at what appears to be the same radius, looks like saw marks to me. If you run your fingernail across them do you feel them?

But I agree, same curved pattern on both sides is super suspicious. That's why I asked! This might need to be lightly sanded to figure it out for sure. Thanks!

jasoninsd - it does me no good to look under a loupe when I don't know what I'm looking for! The stone is smooth like butter. It's super soft, so I can see it being saw marks. I have one of those loupes that go on your phone - I don't know what I'm supposed to see, I see lines either way! So I decided eff it, I'll sand it lightly. So yes, they are saw marks because now the lines go in the other direction. This sure is some super soft shiz!

I know when I look through my loupe, I can see if marks are below the surface (part of the rock) or on the surface (like a fracture or a saw mark).

thanks jasoninsd - This is some really weird stuff. My fingernails and fingers are all blue now. I don't think I ruined it but who knows...I do know it's very stainy. That photo from the loupe was total crap right? C'mon, you know it was. I couldn't tell anything from it - except it was striped. After trying to see something in that sh*tstorm, I decided to sand it. For real though, I have to find the actual loupes - they're around somewhere! Have you ever worked with Vivianite before? All I know about it is that it's Australian and soft and stainy. That sums it up.

LOL Maybe because you knew what to look for... to me it looked like stripes but didn't answer anything.

FYI: "Vivianite is a soft mineral, with Mohs hardness only to 2, and specific gravity 2.7. It splits easily, with perfect cleavage perpendicular to the b- crystal axis, due to the sheet-like structure of the mineral. It is sectile, with a fibrous fracture, and thin laminae parallel to the cleavage plane are flexible.'
