Hello: I am new to the website and rock tumbling. My granddaughter and I have enough rocks to start tumbling. I purchased a National Geographic tumbler. My question is, all of our rocks are round and pretty smooth. Can we skip the first grit and start with the second, as our rocks have no rough edges? Thanks in advance!

Welcome from Washington. I don't tumble, but someone will surely answer your question.

Welcome from Central California. If they're shaped like you want, and you're happy with the flaws or lack of them, you should be able to go ahead with stage 2. I often skip stage 1 for beach rocks.

I agree with what was posted above. If the rocks are shaped well (beach or smooth river rocks) and they are not sedimentary rocks (gritty) you can skip the first step, but I really like doing the first step especially on river rocks because it can reveal hidden problems. That's just me. But as other have said, if you're ok with the imperfections and they aren't pitted, then go ahead.
Good luck!

I almost never skip the first step. I tumble a lot of beach rocks. I looked at a smooth beach rock under a digital microscope before and after the first stage and there was quite a difference. That said, I haven’t tried skipping the first step much at all, so maybe I’m wasting my time. If you really want to know, try it both ways and see for yourself. Experimenting is a great way to learn.

Welcome from Northern Minnesota shag ! Nice to have you here. Sorry that I can't answer your question about skipping a stage as I've never met a rock that couldn't use some shaping. (at least in my eye) Most of us have repeated stages and gone back a stage or started over, I know I have.
