I'm not sure about this one. It looks like opalized or glassy. It almost looks like petfrified wood, except it has a pattern like a picture jasper. There aren't any cracks, that's all pattern. The surface is as smooth as can be, almost like obsidian. That's all I know. Anyone know what this is?? Possible Saddle Mountain Picture Wood - (Me with help of Agate index and online searching)

So after a lot of research - yes, there is a thing as picture petrified wood. I found some from Saddle Mountain called Saddle Mountain Picture Wood. Some online photos looked very similar, I'm not 100% sure it is, but I think it is. If someone knows better, please let me know! Thanks

Here's one. I never identified the type or place, but I called it picture wood. I think it was opalized.

There is fine picture petrified wood near Pet Forest in AZ. I used to hunt it on Greers Milky Ranch adjacent to the park. What you've pictured does look like the Saddle Mtn stuff.

Unless it’s Arizona or a few others. Pet wood is extremely hard to verify for locality. At least for me it is. I would say that’s more than likely saddle mountain however.

I agree that it could be Saddle Mt picture wood, in fact pretty likely. I have a piece in cue for either the wet angle grinder or the "new" to me machine I got last week. Maybe I'll get a pic when I'm out in the shop to get a bit off my "new" machine for a paint match. If that's where it is...

Tommy - thank you for digging out your samples. No worries. I loved that big rock and wish I could have a do-over on my decision to sell it a few years ago. Not sure what I wasnt thinking at the time...

Tommy - thank you for digging out your samples. No worries. I loved that big rock and wish I could have a do-over on my decision to sell it a few years ago. Not sure what I wasnt thinking at the time... I'm starting to get that way too. I've sold a few pieces that afterwards I find myself staring at the pictures longingly. I have to keep reminding myself that it's necessary, I need to make room so I can bring home more.
