We all know the occasional disappointment that sometimes arises while cabbing — or the occasional delight. Here are three that surprised me this week.
1. Variolite — A pleasant surprise! As I cut it, the the dark green "vegetation" area slowly revealed the eye: "Careful, there be dragons in those woods!"
2. Stromatolite — Also a pleasant surprise? I don't think so. Two vug "eyes" developed, and they look to me like an owl peeking out of Fall foliage. I'm debating whether to change the shape to eliminate them.
3. Belvadee Jasper — This is a different case. It was a small, rectangular cut-off that had a couple of flames! Can't toss those!! So I cabbed it and pointed the top to make the shape more interesting. That's when I saw it! "Who set fire to the outhouse?!!" Look at it — it even has "smoke" near the top! I mean, who would wear that around their neck?!!

I don't know, I kind of like the fire and smoke on the last one.

I like all of the, Gary. You can reshape the Stromatolite if it really offends you, but I don't see the need. We all know you have and extremely active imagination and most of us wouldn't see what you see without you first suggesting it. I love me the Belvedee. I don't see an outhouse, just the flames and that cab is FIRE!

All look great. Lil vugs like that look nice and add character. In a piece like that, they accentuate the cab.

I like the 2 vugs in the Stromatolite, adds character to a very nice cab.
But I hope you'll post the setting you come up with that accentuates the eye in the Variolite. Should be fun .

Wow those look great, I’d leave them alone. Imperfections when they show up are disappointing, but they are part of the rock. Funny how they always show up just before finishing at least in my short experience with this hobby. It’s nice to see them in others work makes me appreciate it more. Great pieces can’t wait for the next batch. Thx for sharing

I don't mind the vugs, either. Very nice cab- like them all.

I like the stromatolite vugs. They lend character to the piece.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I'll leave the stromatolite as-is. It's growing on me.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I'll leave the stromatolite as-is. It's growing on me. If you don't mind me asking, where did that stromatolite come from? I've recently taken interest in stromatolites and I'm trying to learn more about them.

The stromatolite is from Hungary. I had occasionally purchased faced stromatolite rough from the eBay seller agatedigger-1970. Just a couple of months ago I was surprised to see that he had evidently stopped selling on eBay. You could try contacting him. I would like to know if you get a reply.

opalpyrexia I like the stromatolite best but all are beautiful! I personally like the look of the vugs but I can understand wanting a nice smooth and flawless finish. I've seen a bunch of cool fossilized stromatolite coming from my area in WI/MN. Thanks for sharing!!
