Yeah, that’s smut looks nasty! Wouldn’t have guessed that it was edible in the pre-internet days. In fact, I probably would have burned my field down 😆
Sadly, I don’t know if I like it. We used it in grilled foil packet dinners (my family calls it hobo stew), and the flavors of everything else infused it too much. No one could really distinguish the flavor of it. At least I didn’t taste anything off about it, and texture was fine unlike some other fungi (glares at the giant puffballs and honey mushrooms).
