So I'm finally looking through flats of rocks that I got from an auction two years ago. Here's one box- big, thick slabs of petrified wood and other stuff.not sure what I'm going to do with them because I don't have a flat lap and I'm not that into display pieces. Also, can anyone ID the slab in the picture? There are about 6 or 7 of these and they're pretty cool. Although again, I have no idea what I'm going to do with them! Thanks!

Mike, I don't have an ID on those...but I wouldn't hesitate to cab those bad boys...with the "moss" at the bottom of a shape reaching up into the "blank" agate section would look killer!
The slab looks really thick...so I might choose a shape, cut out the shape, then split the preform to make two cabs. They might be thin...but it doesn't look like they'd be too thin to work.

Thanks for the idea Jason. I might try it...or maybe I'll find a flat lap for a decent price at the rock show this weekend! 🤣

Personally, I would get a flat lap for them or at least get the pads that can be used with angle grinders. My in laws got around the grinding and polishing by embedding things in epoxy and using car polish. Yep, when I asked how they polished the coaster and soap dish slices if they didn’t know what the flat lap was, was told that they just rubbed it with car polish. Worked well enough for people that aren’t interested in lapidary.

Hmm. I'm thinking consecutive slabs off a limb cast. Have seen similar for George West, TX but there are similar ones from the Pacific northwest too.
