I am starting this thread as Little Rock hounding journal for myself. Please feel free to chime in with tips, ID’s or igneous puns. I drive for work a lot and tend to eat my lunch in small regional parks or public easements. Sometimes I end up at construction sites or even at the far corner of a parking lot. I often look at rocks and some make their way into my truck with me. If you would like specifics of where I found something shoot me a PM Here is what I found today in south San Jose near Silver Creek Valley Road. Pretty happy with my random haul. Except for that last one. I walked pretty far to realize it wasn’t a big chunk of jasper lol.

I finally picked up and threw away the tennis balls that I kept mistaking for mushrooms or rocks. Ridiculous amount of trash hidden in my yard!

Nice red moss agate. Is that Stone Canyon jasper? Not a bad haul at all. Thanks for sharing.

Nice red moss agate. Is that Stone Canyon jasper? Not a bad haul at all. Thanks for sharing. It is not Stone Canyon jasper but it sure looks like it. The yellow one was found closer to the Hayward fault then the San Andreas fault. According to my google research Stone Canyon comes from Parkfield CA which is right on the San Andreas Fault. My rocks are from within San Jose city limits, about 150 miles north of Parkfield. The yellow rock is pretty unique though. I haven't found a lot like that in the area. I guess it's not it's fault that it gets around?

Stopped by one of my usual spots today and it looks like the lake dried up! Or they drained it? Lots of rocks for me either way. I think I am going to run out of spit!

1Dave: Microcline is a Potassium rich Alkali Feldspar, you could change that one to Albite. I like the graphic explanation.

demihuman - This one looks cool as heck! Is this one mossy? I can’t tell. It’s super crusty. I broke it in half to see what was inside and it looks like it might just be crusty all the way through, but I think maybe it might have just broke along a section of that pink rind stuff. I need to put it on the saw to find out. It definitely has some clear veins and it looks like there are some botryoidal shapes coming through. I also need to figure out a set up for taking nice pictures of my slabs. I guess a wet and dry picture is the way to do it. I want to see if I can sell or trade some of my nicer slabs. It would be pretty cool to pay for gas or cutting oil by selling some of the rocks I collect. Maybe I could even save enough to get a little vibro-lap machine

Here’s another pic: And here’s the *probably* not granite I also keep finding this stuff. It has a different texture than the Jasper Agate stuff but is similar. It seems a little grainier? Is this flint?

That chunk in the photo after the backlit one looks really nice. Thanks for sharing.

That chunk in the photo after the backlit one looks really nice. Thanks for sharing. The one with the pink? Yeah I don’t often see that color. I think there might be some green too. I hope the color continues through the rock. Sometimes the brighter colors are just on the weathered rind. I’ll cut it up soon

Here is a picture of the not-granite sliced. It’s pretty neat! lots of tiny orbs. I think I might cut a little piece of to tumble and see what it looks like polished
