The results for the 2024 Feather River tumbling contest have been posted. www.featherriverrocks.org/rock-tumbling-contest/Looks like I got 24 points, along with a dozen other people, But I am really happy with that. I was not happy at all with the rocks I sent in. A really hard rock to get a perfect polish on so to see it scored so high tells me everyone else had the same issues.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I ordered my rocks as soon as I could this year, then promptly planned a 3-week vacation in August. :-( That plus the motor on my 33B dying made it so I didn't get to send my rocks in. I'll try again next year!

So 25 is full score. Wondering if they do a mini round of tie-breaker scoring between these full-score submissions.

Did any RTHings place? If not, it may have been the first time.

23 points, and like yourself I/we were NOT happy with our rocks. I literally just got my first ever vibe (a Mini-Sonic MT4) so maybe that will help next year…although I still believe that a rotary tumbler is capable of winning. The China hollow jasper sure is some great looking rock! I still have a few pieces of the rough, which I kept aside to make a few pendants out of.

I finished with a 22. I think I had one or two rocks that I ended up really happy with. But, it's a learning game, I'll be back next year!

Did any RTHings place? If not, it may have been the first time. I stopped entering years ago. Rob does not enter anymore either. Not sure how many others from RTH have stopped. The judging used to be based on 100 points with very specific criteria. In the years I was doing it ties were extremely rare. This year they are down to a 25 point system that is obviously not enough to determine anything. I think there were 8 ties for a perfect score of 25 and over 20 ties for 24 points (over 20 with 23 points). So 25 is a perfect score and 28 people scored 24 or 25. The idea of the contest is great but they need to address the scoring system. I do remember hearing that the old system took club members a very long time to judge so I imagine this new system was to shorten the required time. On a side note congrats to the winner. These look FANTASTIC. Chuck

Congratulations doublebluff, geoff59 and chris1956 You all did a bang up job representing the forum I'm not usually in the tumbling section, so I'm not aware of any other members who placed or entered - please forgive me if I over looked someone. Congratulations to you as well! (Look! chris1956 is a world class tumbler! I know him!!!!)

I mentioned to tribeunited how frustrating it was to have good looking rocks going into polish only to have little holes show up and spots on the rocks that wouldn't polish (I think that was the nature of the material they had). At that point, I just polished them and sent in what I thought was the best. Takes a lot of patience to make it all the way through to the end.

The total points given this year is 25; 1=poor to 5= great. We judged for the following criteria: Finish, Chips, Polish, Grinding marks, and Overall appearance.
So twenty percent of the score is “grinding marks”, eh? (Chuck, that pic you posted is last year’s petrified wood.)
