Hi All,
This is Theo from whalecottagedesigns. You can find out how we are doing learning the dark arts of lapidary and basic jewellery making by checking out that same name on Instagram. We are a husband and wife team, Sheugnet does mostly opal and is learning silversmithing, and I cut anything I can get my grubby paws on in order to learn about material and shape and polish and whatnot, and do a bit with wood and the other metals.
We are about two years into the game now, it all started from me picking up a rock on my early morning walk - being bored with our kids being grown up on other continents now and grew from that! :-) And we love it! We live and work in Dubai, but in a few years will retire back after 25 years here to the very southern tip of Africa. We both still work full-time jobs, and are still on the learning curve, not selling anything yet! We do not tumble or facet, it is mostly cabochon-making and the metal and wood fusion stuff.
I was put onto your website by lapidary1234, who said it was a rocking forum! :-)

Cheers for the new greets! :-) I am just finding my way and having a looky-loo through the forum, but will post as soon as I can find a 15-25 year old to show me how to sort the Cloudinary image upload doodad... sitting giggling here! Even since I turned 60 (much to my surprise by the way) I have been using that as an excuse to get out of things!
For a day or two I can probably just say that I did not see the tutorial right below this reply "because I could not find my glasses"! :-)
Thank you very much Opalpyrexia! Having the most wonderful fun!

Actually, Cloudinary really isn't too bad to set up.
At least I didn't think so.

Welcome from AZ, USA Beautiful stones, and a nice kitty too, looks like my old departed friend Cheeks who used to come visit me in my shop. In your location, I imagine some materials may be more available than here, some of the spectacular agates from Iran come to mind. The cloudinary is fairly easy, just have to follow the steps exactly, I had to open 2 tabs on my laptop and jump back and forth to remember, but it worked first try. Tapatalk also works from what I hear, if you use a mobile device primarily.

Thank you for the kind words Rocknrob and Rockoonz! And for the Cloudinary pep talks too! We literally cannot go rockhounding this side, because there is zero, zip, de nada rocks to be found locally! I have seen some decayed thin epidote layering, and I know that somewhere south of Al Ain there is a bit of marble, but other than that there is nothing useful for lapidary. So we stock up when we go down on holiday to the southern tip of Africa (we are both members of the Cape Town rock and mineral club - and those guys are wonderful!), but mostly we just buy rough online. Shipping kills us, a 5 kg package of rough from Oz cost twice the price in shipping than the actual rocks did! :-) But as we are learning still, we will cut anything we can get our grubby mitts on though begging, buying or stealing :-)

I was searching for more information on belts for the 5 gallon tumbler I inherited from my dad by slik lapidary equipment, and found this forum. Really am excited about learning more. I have been an avid rock hunter since I was 2 years old, but still have a lot to learn. Thanks for allowing me to join, this tumbler is awesome and I watched my dad use it since I was little and now it's my turn.
