Hello friends! I was casually browsing the highland park website and noticed they have this available now. A 3 jaw rock gripper. I wonder how well something like this works. hplapidary.com/products/large-3-jaw-rock-gripper?pr_prod_strat=jac&pr_rec_id=6decd5f7b&pr_rec_pid=8915127533797&pr_ref_pid=8915125141733&pr_seq=uniformI was so impressed with how a "slab grabber" worked that I bought a second one to have as backup along with smaller one. If this 3 jaw grabber didn't cost over $200 I would probably buy one to checkout but at that price point I would need to either see a demonstration in person (preferably) or at least see a video but I can't find one. I'm guessing its a new product so maybe a video will pop up. The other thing is with as with any vise/clamp it needs to be Tight. This may be hard to tell from a video, so I'm not sure. Also while this item sounds cool in theory, once I get an initial cut made I can almost always get the piece secured in the slab grabber. With this thing it seems like even with continued crossfeeding to get slabs it looks like you'd get to a point where you would have to remove the rock and put it in a slab grabber to get the remaining cuts, otherwise you'd cut the jaws off. Maybe in my case (3 slab grabbers) I should just continue using shims to get an initial flat surface for my slab grabber. I now realize by typing all this I've effectively worked my way through my thoughts on it (for me at least). I'm still gonna post it though cuz others may want a look and im interested in folks opinions.

There was someone I think in the west that used to make something similar but doesn't anymore? There was a thread within the last couple years about it. As I recall it was more expensive. Looking at this one, I don't know how well it would grab the rock (the small flat plates at the end of the arms don't look like they would grip well). I think the other one I am thinking about had points on the end of the arms which might grip better.
Val at Minnesota Lapidary Supply told me earlier this year that he was going to be making a clamp but don't know if he has yet or not. He suggested 2x4s in the meantime.
I have several different clamps but now mostly wedge larger rocks in the vice and glue smaller rocks to 2x4s.

chris1956 Val from MN lapidary supply to me the same thing after inquiring about clamps, said he was going to manufacture them there on site I believe. That was summer of 2023, told me to check back around the new year. I called and asked about them maybe March and he told me he was busy trying to get lortone parts and it would probably be awhile before he got around to making the clamps. I'm curious what style of clamp he'll make. I have a vertical clamp that the top is similar to an exhaust clamp where it can kind of hug a round stone. I was able to find a clamp at "the gem shop" bag and bucket sale this past summer for $5.00 but it has a flat top and bottom so it is really hard to get a good clamp on a stone. In fact I've wasn't able to get a confident enough grip on anything to try it. It does have the notched ends so ?maybe? Could work as a slb grabber type tool. Regarding the grabber I linked, I also wonder how effective of a grip it could get on something, especially how the round plate appears to move forward as youcrank the handle opening the jaws at the same time. I wonder if it might be a better design if you could open each jaw independently and lock them one at a time. This is another good reason I'd like to see a video of it in operation. On the other hand, I feel as though for highland park to put their name on something then it would be tested to ensure a good product, at least that's the feel I get regarding their saws. Good clamps are hard to find though, the one guy still selling the slab grabbers on ebay/etsy at least makes them robust and extremely heavy duty. If this one is as durable I could see it being useful for alot of folks
