I've got an old Texas Rocks cabbing machine that still has the 3 thumpers. I've taken the side off it so I can swap out my grinding wheel for polish wheels (I've also recently gotten a 280 because I was having issued going from 180 to 400).......I'm about to swap out the paper on the 2 thumpers with rubber backing and was wondering what I should chose to make my job easier with cabs. I have a 280 wheel, and then 3K, 8K, and 14K wheels. I've got 400, 600, 800, and 1000 grit silicon carbide paper. Which 2 grits would you guys recommend for me to use between the 280 wheel and the 3000 wheel?
Still very much experimenting and learning what works for me, but having a great time and finding a ton of relaxation even if I'm not yet actually finishing many pieces (that will come) =P.

I'm not sure what a thumper is. Are you talking about sandpaper?
I suppose you will want 600 and 1000.

Thumper is the split drum, so yeah, i'm using silicon carbide sand paper rolls cut to length.

I believe I answered this on a Facebook post. I don't think you'll be able to mount expandable drums in the center portion of this machine. You won't be able to slide the sanding belts on/off. Maybe I'm visualizing wrong.
But most common sequence is 80>220>280>600>1200>3000. Again, I recommend using an actual grinding wheel fir at least the 80 grit stage. Sanding will take a Long time.

Thanks. I grind on a 180 hard wheel. If I need to remove more than that will, I have an 80 and 100 on my flat lap. The 180 goes a bit slower, but as I'm learning and playing, it also ensures I don't overgrind as many stones. I'll eventually get an 80 or 100 hard wheel to use, but for now, I just take more time in the rough shaping =P
