So, I just picked up a new to me Covington belt sander. Looks to be their basic model, although its a bit older (ok, a lot older). Getting ready to order some belts for it which appear to be the 3"x24" belts. Im probably going to start with the pack of belts that covington offers on their site since it has a variety of grits. If anyone has any suggestions about belts, grits, tips and tricks they found it would be appreciated. My first plan for the sander is to use it for sanding down the "nubs" that are sometimes left on stones when they come out of the slab saw so they are flat enough to go onto the flat lap. My second plan is to attempt to sand and polish some book ends or quartz towers. The towers I would be making are Missouri quartz plates that I would cut to shape, and then sand/polish the sides and back of. This is where a larger backing plate would help since it would give me a larger supported area to work the stones on. Has anyone here ever modified one of these sanders to add a larger backing plate? Any thoughts on making this modification? Im pretty handy so the fabrication part doesnt worry me. Its more about any problems I might encounter from doing this. Also, to pay the rockhound tax...heres a pic of the sander and some of the quartz I plan to sand/polish!
