I think these may all be repeats but am hoping it’s easier slabbed up. 1: dendritic dolomite. Any specific name or just generic? 2: no clue! White is opal, beige is around 6 mohs, orangey areas are around 4 mohs. Minimal acid reaction, bubbles when first applied but stops immediately so probably reacting to dendritic mineral. 3: I can find amethyst sage with yellow stains or inclusions, but zero luck finding pics with yellow moss! is it just super rare or is this something else? Edit: only wet one side for original pics. This one is both sides wet plus backlit by north facing window. 4: I know this is travertine but am curious about those fan like planes. Is that typical for travertine? It’s my only piece (that I know of) so have nothing to compare to!

Hi cabby! I'll throw my thoughts into this. 1. The only dendritic dolomite I know of is called Apache Dendritic or Desert Rose Dendritic Jasper. Your's doesn't look quite as red as those. I honestly would have guessed unakite if you didn't mention the dolomite. 2. All of the dendritic opals I've come across have very generic names. The unknown locations are called "dendritic opal." The ones from australia - "Australian Dendritic Opal." Not very helpful I know. When I first saw your slab though, I thought it looked a bit like saddle mountain pet wood. So again, having nothing of value to add. 3. If you hadn't said it is amy sage, I would have guessed Ochoho Sunset. Then realrockhound could come in with a very stern look and gave me a verbal spanking. I might have even been put in time out. 4. I've noticed that banded travertine does have that fan looking appearance. Just a note - which you probably already know - a lot of travertine is called onyx by merchants. Silver Lace Onyx, Honey Banded Onyx, Strawberry Onyx, Banded Plume Onyx - all names I've come across for onyx that wasn't onyx. I've also noticed that the travertine with a red band in my collection has come from California. So I helped Zero but replied anyway. What a fruitless endeavor.

tribeunited 1) I might have been assuming 😅 the hardness and streak matches but I’m not sure just how much I looked into it before slapping the “dolomite” label on it. Not really sure what lapidary materials may look like that with the 3.5-4 hardness. 2) not sure if it should be called opal or not since it seems to have layers of different minerals. Again, no idea what exists that may be like that! The two main colors are noticably different hardness, which I don’t know if any pet wood would be like that. Maybe some kind of sediment bed? 3) Amy sage was suggested before I cut this rock but I’ve yet to find any other amethyst sage pics that match this. I don’t have any ochoco to compare but the pics I’m seeing aren’t nearly this clear and also don’t have yellow moss. Found lots of things with yellow staining or inclusions but not moss. The previously cut face was 9x3 and obviously a section of something larger, so can rule out a lot of smaller agates. I suspect this is another thing that has been gone from the market for a very long time! 4) Ty for the travertine info! Was leaning towards California, as well. I mostly look at my rough and slabs wet so was surprised by the pattern when dry! Colors are still blah but the pattern makes it a tiny bit less meh!

On the banded opal - I've got a similar one listed as "Oregon dendritic opal" The color is more orangey than yours is though. It was overcast when I photographed it - the closeup is more true color than the slab On number 3, it looks similar Denio dendritic amy sage. Ochoho Sunset I've seen is more milky than that. I was just saying I would have guessed that, only to poke uncle squatch. ( realrockhound)

Cabby - I looked through mine and found some with yellow moss. Here's one from Humbolt County, Nevada.

I'm sorry, I should have stated that's not my cab. I just posted the photo and linked to the source. I wouldn't want to take credit for someone else's work. Just showing cabby a photo of the Apache Dolomite for her to compare.

Ochoco sunset is more of a jasper. I have about 3000+ lbs of it at the house. I’ve never seen any with transparency to it.

Well, now I've forgotten which number that is, with all the chatter. #3 and who knows. Maybe it ain’t amy Sage. A pic was posted in a different thread that made me think it was. But it ain’t ochoco sunset. I still think it’s Amy sage though

It is without a doubt, amy sage. I had several that looks almost identical. This is what you would call the good stuff.

Thanks for the help, guys! I’ve forbidden myself from look at rocks for awhile due to a billion other things to do… will research the suggestions and re-examine the slabs when things calm down again. Due to the age of this collection there is an extremely good chance that these materials are super rare these days and will take time to track down. He seemed to buy a fair number of things that were already getting rare in the early 80s!

Let’s throw a wrench in the works… my 8 mohs pic can’t scratch any of the slabs or offcuts on any face! 9 barely scratches so let’s call it 8.5-9 mohs. Montana agates can’t scratch it 🤔 Edit: referring to the dendritic thing

You don't have enough ochoco sunset jasper until you can make a jasper angel with it (kinda like a snow angel but WAY more painful)
