We're not in the eye of the storm like jamesp and liveoak probably are but left the campground we were at a couple days early and went home to Columbia this morning. We got over 5 inches of rain today and expecting strong (60+ gusts) and rain here tomorrow. Hope everyone fares well. Oh, The Wind And Rain

Bad choice of words- I know these storms can get pretty bad whether you are in the eye or not.

NHC just bumped it to 140.
Good thing that just affects a very narrow band. Cedar Key, only 65 miles east, reported sustained 55 and a gust of 73. No word yet on the surge height there.

Well we got lucky, hope Jim jamesp up in Atlanta, and RickB in SC, fared as well. Officially 4 1/2" of rain and NO wind. The storm went just east of us, here in Chipley, that we skated by.
Thanks for all the kind thoughts,
Patty

Power went off about 4:00am and don't know when it will come back on. will pull out the generator a little later. Wind gust got to 66mph a little while ago. Tornado watch, torrential rains to come. Many trees down in Columbia but I don't see any down around us. Tropical storm warnings expire 5:00am this coming Monday.

Just got off the phone with my grandson vacationing in St Mary's near Brunswick, GA. They did OK. Power out. Lots of debris, but overall doing fine. Thank goodness. The hotel might comp their stay.

But, glad you're doing well otherwise.

Relieved you're ok. I was worried about you. You got lucky with lopsided Helene.

Atlanta only had like 9 inches of outer band rain mostly steady for 3 days. Not much wind, the west eye wall was spinning south and the storm moved north so the wind was practically neutralized. RickB was on the east eye wall side with the summation of north winds and the fast northerly moving storm; he got the 60mph stuff. The eye was well east of Atlanta and liveoak, all the bad stuff was on the east side of the eye. Water is still collecting in dammed lakes in the mountains, there is a lot of problems up there. Even interstates cut thru. The Chattahoochee River way south in Atlanta is probably peaking today covering large amounts of land up to a half mile from the river basin. They think the Great Smoky Mountain Park had a 500 year rain event(heaviest rain is 500 years). It is located at the border of North Carolina and Tennessee(the high ridge line is the state's border).
There is a time delay as the water makes it down to the larger rivers.
A local storm(17 inches of rain in 14 hours) flooded the near by Dog River 15 years ago, a steep fast flowing river. A 500 year event. It was a moonscape afterward. No bark on the trees 40 feet up, bus sized rocks lifted out of the bottom of the river. No ground foliage up 40 feet, just bare rock. The water was travelling so fast it banked high into the forest at sharp river turns and removed them. Corn growing on fields on the inside turns had sand deposits up to the tassels of the corn, about 6 feet deep. Water is scary.

It would be renewed after many years of collecting. Lake Blackshear dam broke when 1994 tropical storm Alberto stalled over Georgia. They were finding chert artifacts by the 1000's.

They were finding chert artifacts by the 1000's. I view it a lil differently than others. Is it bad? 100%, but opportunity comes out of it. We had a big wildfire here in the Maurys. Sucks all that timber burned up, but I know its going to turn up a lot of new material as well.

Unfortunate damage but 100/500 year flood events exposes rocks never seen by collectors. Check out gravel exposure first 10 seconds of video
