jasoninsdYour cabs are just lovely! And you worked in some of my very favourite material on the planet - the Koroit Boulder Opals. I love them so much, one day I will have to save up and try and get some of that material to work on! :-) Really like the Mtorolite too! I have a little bit of that material, the chrome chalcedony from Turkey too, and it is a pleasure to work on.

LOL jasoninsd Your cabs are just lovely! And you worked in some of my very favourite material on the planet - the Koroit Boulder Opals. I worked another smaller piece of Karoit a month or so ago and posted it...and it was insanely gorgeous! (The material...not my workmanship! LOL) I seriously don't know anything about Mtorolite! I just had to look up the stuff I got...apparently it's from Africa... What are you talking about. Clearly all that material is common and under $2 lb in bulk. I might have a spare Benjamin or three if you'll send me the link for those! LOL |

jasoninsd I don't know all that much about Mtorolite. I'm a chalcedony freak and have always admired the purity of color in gem chalcedonies. My first love was fine gem silica (colored by copper) but my budget has never caught up with the price. Then I became excited when I learned of a chrome chalcedony discovery in what then was Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but was not able until recently to find any rough. I have long had a love affair with fine chrysoprase (chalcedony colored by nickel) and collect carnelians and other types as I find them. The Turkish locality for CC, mentioned above, is not known to me. The only deposits I know of are in Zimbabwe and Australia. A material sold as Chrome Chalcedony is mined in Western OZ, but the stuff I've seen is very different than the African material. It's a blend of opaque mottled black, brown, green and white that cuts nice cabs but lacks the purity and translucence I look for in gem chalcedony. Maybe there's some of that out there but I haven't found any. Th same is true of the Mtorolite I'm seeing sold. I've only been able to find partially translucent material with lots of opaque areas and voids. Your piece has nice translucence but lacks the depth color I like. Chromium is the colorant in emeralds, remember. Also ruby, but that's another tale.

jasoninsd I almost missed this! I am, honestly, at a loss for words. I think this is the best group of slabs that you've ever posted. I especially love the koroit short fat shield. Amazing!

I was wondering about the "muted" colors in this rough making it less "desirable". I know this was the end chunk...but I don't think the rest of the slabs are any more vibrant... jasoninsd I almost missed this! I am, honestly, at a loss for words. You are braver than I am. I have some boulder opal but have not been brave enough to cut and cab it. It is definitely pricey material and I don't want to mess it up.

I sure hope they are! LOL That's the one that caught my eye originally. The piece Robin sent me had a pattern in it...kinda like that one in the bottom left. That one, and the two in the top corners definitely piqued my interest! Fingers crossed they aren't junk! |
