Felt wonderful to get on the wheels yesterday, record day for me- 6 cabs DONE !
I also enjoy working on new stuff, it's great fun to watch the patterns & textures on the stones develop.
Many thanks to Tela rockjunquie, for helping me broaden my horizons Forgot the quarter
Not sure what this one is- maybe someone has an idea.
I'm calling it my "Autumn cab"
Maggot agate - fun stuff, like the pattern-even comes with maggot holes
This next one was so hard to photograph - Texas Moss Agate Doublet.
I got this already glued up, so it seemed like a no-brainer that I had to get going on it.
The black backing stone (basalt ?) really brings out the moss agate top.
The couple of doublets I have done myself, were using clear quartz or glass toppers, so it was really interesting to do a different type.
I was pretty surprised how thin the top layer of moss was - But then that's likely why the pattern stands out so nice.
Granite.
This one was from a rock my sister and I sliced up when she was visiting, that she found in MA. It's amazing to me how many colors and patterns "granite" can have. This one has crystals in it & smokey quartz. Really lovely.
Making a grove wrap on this one to just emphasize the stone & a present for my sister.
Tiger Eye A sweet little tiger eye - really love the chatoyant effect
Coprolite
OK, here's my experimental crap - That actually worked!
So I ground this oval cab a while back, first stabilizing the pre-form with my thinned epoxy. Before stabilizing, it was obviously chipping at the edge & wanting to fall apart. When I ground the initial shape, it undercut terribly - So bad, that I put it aside.
Sadly, I didn't take a photo of it, as it looked that bad. Next time I will.
So I wondered if I stabilized it again, now, after the coarse grinding was done, then gently grind off the surface epoxy, & then move onto pre-polish & polish, I could limit the undercutting, and get a finished cab out of it.
It worked on another coprolite cab, that I initially stabilized, but I wanted to see if I could save this one.
It really did work, as the epoxy filled in the areas that were undercutting, and I was able to polish it up pretty nicely.
Thanks for looking,
Patty

What a piece of CRAP! And I mean it. I think it's my favorite and I really like the granite, too. I'm hoping to find some nice granite in Maine. The older I get, the more I like it.
Nice polishes!

Great cabs! I have always thought that regular granite could make some great cabs and you have proved it! Unakite can turn out great, no reason other granite can't. I just haven't gotten around to it. My fav is the doublet.

Thanks, Tela.
I was pleasantly surprised I was able to "fix" the coprolite.
Look forward to seeing some of your wild free-range granite . Great cabs! I have always thought that regular granite could make some great cabs and you have proved it! Thanks for noticing !

Great looking cabs Patty! They’re all unique. I really like the maggot agate. I’m not sure why, but it really grabbed my attention. There’s a lot going on with that one. Six in one day is an accomplishment. Thanks for sharing your work.

Liveoak, I really liked you epoxy stabilizing procedure and the detailed reason on what not to do so one gets a good result. Mix and kick epoxy, measure 1/3 by volume and add acetone, cover warm stone with mix and then dry or harden treated stone before grinding.

Liveoak, I really liked you epoxy stabilizing procedure and the detailed reason on what not to do so one gets a good result. Mix and kick epoxy, measure 1/3 by volume and add acetone, cover warm stone with mix and then dry or harden treated stone before grinding. You got it, Victor ! What happens is as the stone cools down, it draws the epoxy inside.
It's worked for me pretty reliably.
If you try it and have any questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Patty
