Hi,
It has been awhile since I bought grit. Is the best place (quality and price wise) to purchase grit for use in the first stage (rotary Lorone tumblers) still Kingsley North - #80 Silicon Carbide for about $129 - 45 lbs (includes shipping)?
Am I correct that graded grit is better than ungraded grit? (#80 vs. 69/90)
I tumble beach rocks and rocks I purchased from a great store in Cedarburg, WI that has barrels/bins of affordable mixed rocks (primarily jasper and various types of agates).
Thanks for the assistance, Leisa

Greetings, Grading at #60-90 does not matter much for coarse grind. I wouldn't use anything lower than #60 in my 3lb. barrels. I run #46 in my 12lb. barrels. If you are looking for #80 graded SiC for a bit cheaper---you can try Johnson Brothers Lapidary ($109 for 44lbs. shipped in the continental USA): Johnson Brothers Lapidary

Not really, from RockTumbler.com "ungraded grit" has a wide range of particle sizes. For example, an abrasive sold as "60/90 grit" would have a range of particle sizes smaller than 60 grit (250 microns) but larger than 90 grit (166 microns). Ungraded grits do not require the same level of processing needed for graded grits. That allows ungraded grits to be sold for a lower price than graded grits. For rock tumbling, the less expensive ungraded grit works fine and that is what most people use for the coarse and medium grit steps. With the prevalence & ready availability of Silicon Carbide grit pricing may be nearly the same for graded & ungraded so I just go with which one I can find cheapest.

One place to try is an industrial supply company if you have one near you. I get my grit in 50 pound bags at Kleen Blast in Portland, Oregon. Worth the 90 mile round trip, still cheaper than anything I can find elsewhere. They have straight graded only.
