A couple of my rocks looked very promising through stages 1 - 4 but after stage 4 I still have a few promising rocks with crevices and rough spots that undoubtedly required more time in stage 1. Any tips on running some of these over again on stage 1? For how long this time? And then should I run them through stages 2-4 again? Will they lose the polish they attained in stage 4? Should I run them only with other rocks that have gone through all 4 stages but need more work? Or is it ok to run them with rocks that haven’t been tumbled at all yet? Lots of questions. Thanks in advance.

Run them with other rocks that are of the same hardness. It does not matter if they are run previously, they will rough back up. It happens all of the time. Just keep on keeping on.

If you do YouTube video tutorials and are not already familiar with him, check out the Jugglerguy Rob's channel for real good videos on all the process. www.youtube.com/user/jugglerguy1Doing inspections at every stage and separating stuff to go on to the next stage, while continuing on with those that aren't ready yet, is the name of the game with tumbling, with some materials it might take a couple barrels of rough grind to accuculate enough to go on to stage 2, if you're like us and don't add much filler.

Welcome! If you go back to stage 1, you need to go through stage 2,3,4... again.

I did this so many times! Would think oh this is fine to move on then almost to polish and it still really bugs me so right back to stage 1 OR that fracture I was hoping would hold did not hold so there were rough edges needed to be ground back smooth and guess what, right back to stage 1 again :/ I learned to be better at identifying what will actually bother me sooner! Also better to go ahead and break a rock that’s fractured then wait for it to happen naturally then back to stage 1 anyways. Those sharp edges ruined a lot of material that was near completion, which means back to stage 1!
I tried putting in fresh rocks to fill back up after volumn loss and it ended up not being good for the rocks I already had in there so I did sort a barrel of almost done stage 1 from just starting stage 1. Had a beautiful big translucent flawless rose quartz that was almost done stage 1, added some new rough material and it chipped, fractured, gouged it, so where did they go? Back to stage 1. I just have to live with the fracture now. But I’ve learned so far is rock tumbling is oh idk, 80% at least of time spent is stage 1. All the other stages seem to zoom right along.

I feel you on the rose quartz. You have to be extra special careful with it. From now on I tumble rose quartz separately with nothing but media. It takes a very long time but it is worth it.

If I have to move something back to stage one I just put it in with a new batch or some that are already in that stage. Yes, then they have to go through the whole process again.
