Hello lovely forum people! So, I've got some extra challenging rocks today. I've hit a wall on all of them. I'm not feeling super optimistic on these but here goes anyway. This one. I believe it is an agate. It is glassy feeling. There is something quite strange about the black color parts of the stone - they are waxy. Waxy enough that the stone wouldn't wet when I sprayed it. Also water would come right off if i dipped it. I tried cleaning the surface with degreaser. acetone, alcohol, no luck. A very hydrophobic stone. 1. Old stock Eagle Rock Plume Agate - thank you Tommy    Second. A purple with moss. Nothing unusual to report. 2.  Third, another semi-hydrophobic stone. Not an agate. The black area has a lighter shade on the top that wouldn't wet. I don't know what this is to be honest. 3.  Fourth - I'm guessing a stromolite. I know it almost appears to be gary green larsonite in photos, but I really don't think it is. 4.   Next, an I don't know. It's like agateyish as far as being glassier than a typical jasper. Maybe something else. I need to get better at figuring out what these are! 5. Arizona Banded Serpentine - Thank you Tommy ! AKA "Young Serpentine" - thank you AzRockGeek  Number 6. I want to guess at feather ridge or graveyard point or something oregon. The stone looks blurry and out of focus but it's just made that way. I took about 30 photos of this one thinking I just had to focus the camera better until I realized it was designed that way. realrockhound - do you know?? 6. Regency Rose Plume - thank you hummingbirdstones !   Rhyolite. Weird grey patterns here... 7. Sonoran Dendritic Rhyolite - thank you jasoninsd  No freaking clue here. Some truly bizarre features. 8.   Like I said, this is the challenge edition. I can't find anything I can settle on for these, and would appreciate any help. |

I don't know if Psilomelane is hydrophobic or not but that first on reminds me a bit of Psilomelane agate. The purple looks like it'll make some pretty cabs.

I've yet to comment on all of these posts...I missed where you came by all of your wonderful slabs tribeunited . Must have been an estate sale or auction? I guess you could say I hit the lapidary lottery? My husband and I were given the collection from an elderly couple that he does work for. They collected for decades, and I would say the slab part of it is pretty large. I could be wrong, maybe this is a normal amount! Seems like a lot to me though! I would say 1 out of 10 slabs are marked - so it's a lot to go through and ID at least. I think I joined this forum in May and I'm still working on the slab part of the collection. I might just be sloooooowwwww. lol |

dreamrocks - I didn't think of obsidian. I'll look at that, thanks for the suggestion! RWA3006 - Thanks for trying! I has a feeling these were challenging! I should follow up with an easy edition to give people a chance. LOL rockbrain - I'm going to look into that psilomelane idea. I'll check and see if it is hydrophobic - thanks for the suggestion!!

Nice rocks but I don’t recognize any of them. I don’t think hydrophobic is an identifying feature. Slabs cut in oil are often hydrophobic.
The explosion of yellow in the second slab is really interesting.

That first one looks like a very seriously DENSE moss agate. I'm not recognizing it...and did a search, but didn't find anything that fits that bill.
#7 - Maybe a "one off" of Sonoran Dendritic Rhyolite...

They were stacked everywhere and dirty and we had nowhere to put them! Then he started trying to ID them, but he doesn't have the kind of time nor the patience that I do. So he began showing me rocks and I looked at them with about as much disinterest as anyone could possibly have. It wasn't until he kind of "forced" me into IDing rocks that I started to get into it. I say forced because I didn't really want to do it, but he 's been with me long enough to know how to get me to do something... He first had to admit he couldn't do it and I was better than he was at it. LMFAO!! Ok, not exactly, but it was more like he couldn't figure one out so he gave it to me, and I ID'd it. Then I'd be watching tv and he would put one on my lap. Next thing I know, he'd place them on ,my laptop, and even on me while I was sleeping. It wasn't instant, but there were a few rocks I remember thinking "wow" when I saw them. Like Graveyard point plume, or sonoran sunset, and rhodonite. Then, something switched in me somewhere along the way. I think when I started trying to take pictures of them to get ID's - I started seeing how pretty they are. Now, I'm more into them than he is I think. My inquisitive nature wants to know more and more, and being able to ID them makes me feel satisfied. Going back to old ones and being able to ID them is super satisfying too!!! That's way more than you asked, I know. I think its kind of fun to share this. There's hope for anyone to be into rocks - I was the furthest thing from a rockhound as anyone could possibly be! The only time I ever picked up rocks was when I was at the beach, but they didn't come home with me. They decorated my sand castles! I did however collect crystal specimens. I never knew what they were, I just put pretty ones on the shelf. I had no idea they were rock related! |

I've washed these in dawn dish soap, used acetone, and tried 99% IPA. |

I had the same impression on the first one being a super dense moss. The stone isn't just resistant to water, its all resistant to being clearly photographed! I almost feel like its a leaverite version of something greater. It probably needs to be cut and polished before it tells us anything!!! Thank you for trying to find it though, that's super nice of you. I think you're spot on for #7 - which is bizarre and cool. I've seen both of those colors in it before, just not independently. I don't want to offend anyone, but I keep calling this one "sonoran abuelita." I'll leave it at that. LOL |

taylor - thanks for the suggestion on the chrysoprase. I'm always looking for ideas and look into all of them because you just never know! I'm going to search in that direction and see if there are stromolite-ish looking chrysoprase specimens. Thanks for adding your thoughts, they are very much appreciated!!!!
