Today's features (in addition to some Alimejo agates not pictured here). Aragonite and Lilac Calcedony. For scale, the Lilac is maybe 3/4" - 1" by 3" - 4". I'm hoping to be able to get some small pendants and earring combos out of the lilac, I have no idea what I can do with the aragonite. It's super soft. - Rob

Yeah that pattern is stellar, I bought a bunch of rough seam agate and so far the color has been amazing. Soft but detailed. I really can't wait to play with it on the lap. - Rob

The lilac chalcedony seems to be lacking detail though I suppose if it had banding it would be considered an agate.
I've collected some druzy quartz/Missouri lace agate that had rather subdued details and it has a certain appeal to it.
Either way, the chalcedony is super cool and I bet will make stunning cabs! Do you know the locale where it comes from?
I've seen a few different types of aragonite but never saw any that looked like that. Isn't it fascinating how different a mineral can look depending on locale?
Kind of like how we have vein datolite in Michigan but it can form in crystals as well.
Thanks for sharing 👍

lapidary1234 I do believe this particular variety of calcedony comes from Mexico who never ceases to surprise me on the geological wealth they have. So much beautiful stuff. You were right about the cabbing from it, I took a chip and made a quick freeform egg of it. Polished like a champ although the white dots are some kind of mini-vug so there's an interesting texture on it. - Rob

rocknrob nice!! Now that you mention it, I got a "Mexican tumbling mix" that has similar material. For sure Mexico is loaded with minerals. I just gave a presentation on Mexican minerals for my gem club last month. If you really want to go down a wormhole, read about the Ojuela mine. There have been 119 different minerals found there, many are "type locality" meaning thats the first place they've been identified!
