Hello All!
I'm new-ish to rockhounding, as in going out intentionally to find rocks - I've been randomly picking up neat looking rocks my whole life, lol! I'm positively obsessed with both geodes and opals, and going hunting for both is on my life's bucketlist!
I'm currently using a Pro-series Double Barrel (6lbs capacity) Rock Tumbler from WireJewelry. The batches I did with the grit that came with it turned out fantastic, but the recent 2 batches I've done, I used a Nat Geo grit set and the results have been very... underwhelming. I'm not sure why, as it's the same kinds of stones as my first 2 batches, but nothing has come out with the high gloss smoothness as before. Any suggestions for where to get some good, reliable grit (at a reasonable hobbyist-level price) would be greatly appreciated!
I also hope to get into making my own custom dice (cast resin) and hopefully (fingers crossed) my tumbler might be able to save me a bunch of time during the clean-up/polishing stage.
I'm excited to be here and eager to learn as much as I can about this awesome hobby!

Welcome from Missouri. Johnson Brothers probably has the lowest cost on grit (at least larger quantities of coarse grit) and they don't add for shipping. I recently ordered my first box from them and so far it seems similar to other grit. Someone on the forum recently suggested checking out local Industrial Supply companies. I haven't done this yet.

I know for a long time, The Rock Shed has been one of the most used places from which to order reliable grit. (I'm not just saying that because they're down the road from me! LOL)

Hi from Australia.
The National Geographic grits do the job, but their polish isn't a proper polish, so that's probably affected your rocks. If you still have National Geographic grit, you can use it and use their polish as an additional step, then use a decent polish from somewhere else.

Welcome from Washington state. Very good recommendations from chris1956 and jasoninsd. Best bet is to buy from a reputable company. The Rock Shed has been my go to. I hope to see the dice when they are finished.

Woohoo! Another dice enthusiast! I'm still very much in love with my collection of dice as I still do play tabletop role playing games. At some point I wouldn't mind giving making my own sets of dice, heck I've got the resin in the garage but I've uh, developed an addiction to cabbing and it's kind of all consuming. Welcome from Washington State!
