Seems like I started this thread in 2024 too. Perhaps it's because I travel a lot and tend to be working on trips several months in advance all the time.
Walter and I have made arrangements to go again and hope rented vehicle problems don't prevent us from making the BBQ night again. Changing that flat on I40 with big semis whipping by at 85mph was, frankly, darn scary. Had to return the vehicle to the Vegas airport for a replacement so we had to overnight in Vegas instead of making the BBQ. We ate a fine meal but would have rather been with Tony and you all.
In 2023, we were 75/25% there for shows/field work. Last year 50/50. In 2025, 25/75, so we are going to arrive only the day of the BBQ, check out a few materials at the PowWow and Desert Gardens, do the BBQ, and take off the next morning for 4 days in the desert. We will fly in and out of Vegas again.
Among other places, we hope to get further into some areas NE of Barstow again, as we were rained out there on our last day and had to head out early.
Some of you have met Walter and know he has a prosthesis as one leg is amputated below the knee. It's very challenging for him to negotiate outdoors but he goes slow and careful and gets real excited. He calls it "being in the moment". In late May, he and I went to the amethyst mines in Thunder Bay, ONT and also rockhounding for very dark cherts W of there and found lots. I'm just starting to tumble the cherts which seem to be various forms of banded jasper/cherts with iron ore in there also. The iron ore bands seem to be softer than I wish and may not tumble well in the end. We also went to the source mine store for Mary Ellen jasper and got some.
He got a new artificial knee recently in his good leg and so far so good.
Hope to see as many of you there as possible!
