I think this is Bruneau Jasper, but I'm having trouble matching it up in both color and overall shape of the slab to other bruneau slabs. I've notced that bruneau tends to be less rectangular than this one. If it helps, this slab is 4.5" long and 3.5" tall. If it is Bruneau, is this a bad quality/off color/low grade bruneau?

It doesn't look quite right for Bruneau - usually the lines between dark and light are more well defined. That being said I've never been there to see what the lower grade material looks like so wait for others to chime in.

Thank you Pat - I appreciate it! rockjunquie and realrockhound - thank you both! Is this what would be a low grade or undesirable color of bruneau? I've not found one in this color online, and cabs I see are typically that chocolate looking or brown creamy looking color with way better orbing. It seems that this is either very old, very uncommon, or maybe just rrh's leaverite.

tribeunited I would say, I see why you think it is Bruneau but it is Mookite. Even though I am the only voice to say it. You can grind a piece of each and the feel will be different.

That's crazy! I would have never guessed it in a million years. I've got both of those, I'll ask D to grind a piece of each against this one for comparison. Thank you!

You're not alone. I'm really on the fence on this. I've cut lots of both stones and this just doesn't look like Bruneau orbs patterns to me, while it does resemble some Mook in my slab stash. If I could see the piece up close and personal I think I could decide for sure but not from this image.

I’ve been wrong before. So I could be wrong again. I’m just basing it on stuff I’ve seen on bruneau. Those aren’t orbs per se. But a color shift in the stone. It’s like orbing that couldn’t orb. I’ll eventually get some pics of what I’m talking about.

It looks more like Bruneau than anything else I could guess, but it could be a lot of things.

I dont think it is either of those. I think it is some of that jasper from Wiley Wells.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one struggling with this one!!! I want to thank everyone who gave their opinions - I value them all so much, thank you. I've been trying to find pictures of Wiley Wells area Jasper - I haven't had much luck but I'm not giving up. I only figured out that it might also be referred to as Hauser Jasper. I may have to use a map for this one. I still love this investigating part. Even if it leads to nowhere, I always end up learning something new Thank you everyone!
