Supposed to be very high silica rhyolite, and so hard and takes a great polish.

vegasjames that's not the stuff from gemfield is it? I wanted to drive in there back in June when we went to Oregon, but with a travel trailer we decided to turn around.

No, Gemfield is Southern Nevada. We were in Central Nevada North of Tonopah, probably around 30 miles from Tonopah. So, around 60 miles from Gemfield.
The Gemfield rhyolite is quite different.
If you go back that way, another option is the first road after the Gemfield turnoff is the first turnoff to Silver Peak. Turning there then going in a couple miles is a great area to look. Lots of interesting chalcedony, some candy rhyolite and common opal. Few more miles down is Alkali Hot Spring, which is a great place to camp.
