dang nice rocknrob , very well done. I like the shape and the pumpkin cheesecake look. That came out great! Thanks! I wanted to let the pattern dictate what shape would work best and that angle worked out to include all that texture. Hehe, It's strange to work on a rock that makes me hungry. Then again I haven't had the opportunity to work on a bacon or sowbelly yet - Rob

I thought of this competition theme as soon as I saw this slice of pie!

This is a recipe for a very rich cake that is great for Thanksgiving if one doesn’t like pie. This recipe was copied from a “Texas Pecan Association” monthly publication about 30 years ago. This cake freezes well and is great toasted with butter. I use about 5 or 6 Tamopan persimmons for the pulp. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a chance to try a persimmon a little while back. Very tasty, I bet they would make good pies. A cabachon, probably not so much.

rockbrain the conflict I have is between likes pie and should be eating pie. There will be a nice no sugar added apple pie at the thanksgiving dinner as well as the pecan for the eternally skinny Elizabeth. Thin Lizzy?

Alright, I've got a tentative submission. Tentative because I want feedback since I'm still very new at this and I wonder if i can do better with practice/inspiration. The material is Wonderstone, and I picked it because it gives vibes of cranberry sauce and gravy. To inspire feedback - I think the part i struggle with the most is keeping the dome even. This time around i did create a girdle line but found it hard to keep track of when moving past wheel 2, and i did end up griding some of it away in efforts to have the dome reach the top (and not have a flat top). I think i made it hard for myself by choosing a fairly large shape. If i want more in-depth feedback, should I create a post on a different thread? olimarmaster Great submission! And it is literally just practice that will advance you. If you are drawing the girdle line, then figuring out the hand eye stuff to keep it in place is just practice, and the same will go for the dome shaping. And it will come quicker than you think! Go as slow as possible when you are still learning, and think it through as you go, then when you get used to the action, you will find you speed up over time quite fine. You are very much not far off a perfect dome and girdle line.

olimarmaster That's a great start! Looks like my plate after everything's eaten complete with cranberry juice. victor1941 Hahahaha! I had a good chuckle seeing what you've got there. I can only imagine the patience it took to carve that out without breaking it. Good show sir! - Rob

Rocknrob, I agree about breakage because this rough had uneven thickness and I wanted to stop with an entry. When the garage warms up I may try to thin by one half.

olimarmaster - Great entry for the contest!! Credit to whalecottagedesigns for some great info! When I draw my girdle line, I generally use a fine-tipped black sharpie. On my initial grind, I get close to the line, but don't hit it (most times). Then when I go to the 220 hard, I take the dome right down to the line. Then on the 280 soft, I generally take "half" that thin line...then by the time I get through the 600, there's only a hair of the line left. victor1941 - Freakin' A, that's what I'm talkin' about!! Way to go on that wishbone Victor!!
