Well, I haven't been logged in for a few weeks, been very busy. One of the things I've been up to is hunting Patuxent River Agate. It started a few weeks ago, I was searching the net for Agate and got a few hit about Patuxent River Agate. Well, I live just south of the Patuxent and have never seen any agate around here. The only site I could find that had pics was www.mdstategemstone.citymaker.com/page/page/1406509.htm This site is real slow to load, I had to try several time till it did. As soon as it finally did, I almost fell off the chair. I know where there is a whole rooftop full of those stones. Now, where did they mine it from? After looking over Geo maps and checking out some spots I finally found a good collecting spot Here are some samples, dry Here are a few slab I cut Well I have a load in 500F and will be pulling them out in the AM, I'll get some pics then. Also, sorry about the pics, its a new camera and I'm still learning. Hops you enjoy

Hey yogi, in the first pic, are those the agates covering the ground in the foreground? If so, then you did hit the jackpot. Those are some nice looking agates. I like the colors.

Stoner, that beach is all types of quartz, but within a little over a half hour I had a 5 gal bucket near full of nice colorful stones. I've been back 3 times in a week and a half

So the stones in the pics are quartz? Either way, still nice looking stones.

Well, I use the term quartz but its more or less the same material, silica, just not the deep colors. From the web site "It is silica replaced fragments of petrified bone material, mostly dinosaur bone". Some pieces look very similar to dino bone, just not as well defined, other pieces are almost crystal clear with a range of color from yellow to red. The stone is beach gravel from the late Cretaceous era, this layer is also exposed for quite a distance from the river channel. Bill

OMG Yogi, how lucky that you have a place to find them so close. I love the colors, those are really pretty and I can't wait to see them polished.

How much are those worth per pound? I wouldn't mind having some to cab, or to perhaps tumbler if enough is available.

Cher, I got to tell ya, these last couple weeks have been a blast. It's kind a like a treasure hunt, I was studing maps, checking dirt roads and creeks on my way home, trying not to trespass. I think I'm getting hooked on these rocks. P.S. I'm real glad to hear you got such good news from the doctor! Inflight22 I promise to post some more pics in the morning, I've been peeking and I'm real happy. Bill

That stuff looks fantastic! It reminds me of Cape May rocks, meaning the beauties that you pick up there that aren't "Cape May Diamonds," and therefore, they are viewed as pretty useless, by the Cape May Diamond snobs, while the rest of us bring buckets full home with us. They are nicely colored and nicely rounded quartzy rocks. I'm from Maryland but never rockhunted on the Patuxent.
Speaking of Maryland, I called the Mary Sue candy company today to get my annual fix of Mary Sue Easter Eggs. Every year I have to get the dispenser boxes like they always had at Rite Aid, where the cardboard things hold the 1.5 ounce eggs that sell for about 49 cents each. I just bought some at case price which indicated that the price has gone up; however, there's just something so cool about those foil wrapped eggs that we used to buy for a nickel on the way home from school. I love setting up the cardboard backing of the bunny rabbit. I also like the 1/4 lb. eggs and the 1/2 lb. eggs. Those belong in the freezer. Then, when you get the impulse you pull one out and slice off a slice in the middle of the night. I felt guilty enough about buying a case of vanilla and a case of chocolate 1.5 ounce eggs, so much so that I just couldn't order the 1/4 lb. eggs too, just to have the same thing in a different form. Woe is me. In case any of the rock board police are around, this is tangetially related to the preceding post because the Patuxent is in MD, and therefore someone else may be hip to Mary Sue Easter Eggs. (Also, one of the top 5 or 10 local TV commercials ever!)

I don't care what it is, it looks cool & you're lucky to have found a good place to foray! I'm still dying to get up to Hill 60 to prospect the creek by the public road. I figure I might find some that was washed down from where the claim is & I won't be breaking any laws by collectin on public property out of a creek bed. Then again it may just be a pipe dream. I'm also still looking for the source of that red/blue metalic brecciated jasper I keep finding small chinks of on certain beaches...

Very cool, Yogi. I grew up in Bowie and still have friends and family in the area. I may have to go visit some folks there soon. Whereabouts are you?

I have no idea about a price, I'll have to think about that. I'll be on vacation next week and come up with something. I want to share my good luck, but not too interested in turning it into a business, having too much fun. Perhaps some trading or a contest for members. Matt, I live about a half mile from Old Town Bowie, if you do come up, let me know. Too funny Puppie96

I'd be planning our weekly excursions looking for dirt roads and gravel pits and yes, trying not to tresspass. After she moved to Iowa, she's been doing some checking and finally found a real gravel pit not too darn far from her house. We thought all there was around there was lime and fossils but they have rocks too. I'm going to stay with her for a week and am so hoping they'll give her a day off so we can go digging for awhile. There's also a river/creek not too far that's supposed to have some nice agates so I'll be looking for that place too. Cher
