I like the "large eye" palmwood. I bid on some several times, but did not want to bid enough. LOL. I have some small-eye that looks nice. I will post a picture tomorrow.

Nice. I saw a lapidary e-rock shop once that listed that big-eyed palm as petrified palm root. Darned if I can find the link now though. Nice stuff whether it's from above or below ground.

Cool stuff! How can you tell that it's palmwood? Can't wait to see the palm cabs.

Not trying to doubt you one bit, but that pet-palmwood looks entirely different than the ones I have. Like Joe said, how do you know it is palmwood?

Yup, the big eyes are palm roots. Sometimes you can even see the structure in cross sectional cuts. Root is more common in Calif because most the palms were apparently burnt off and buried by hot volcanic ash thus destroying most of the tree trunk with the fiber. The pieces with the little little tubular designs are palm fiber which in California is actually rarer than root. Funny, but in Texas and Louisiana the root is rarer than the fiber probably because there the palms were not burnt down and of course, palms have more trunck than root by volume. Sometimes you even finds agates full of petrified dates which is also very cool. The material works up real fine and takes a glass like polish but, to me at least, it seems to be very hard to cut with the slab saw. Don't know why but the stuff is tough! ...mel

Well, I'm just going by what the guy in the store told me. Root or wood, it's still cool looking stuff. And hey, technically, roots are wood too.

Kim: Texas and Louisiana palm fiber comes in a variety of colors. Most is brown, gold or black but I have some picture palm wood, clear almost like crystal, and red to pink. I've also seen blue and green but rarely. The Calif palm root is also variable as much comes from colorful volcanic ash beds which impart some nice colors to the material. Reds and browns are normal but greens, blues, pinks, purples and yellows are around too. The fiber usually shows the squiggley lines when cut with the fiber or dots when cut in cross section. The roots are just plain cool as frequently the vascular bundles and everything are perfectly preserved just like in a botany text book.. I love the stuff!...mel

Here is the piece I have cut a few slabs off of. The cut face is about 44mm square. I also took a thick endcut with the bark pattern on one sade. I am thinking about taking at least ne cut showing dots, (thumbnails)
