i sure hope this isnt true....but some of the older guys that have been dealing in rock for 40 years or more...are saying that these agates just arent right....they seem to think over the years someone would have found the same thing.....and they would have seen it.
i sent them the photos over the last 2 weeks or so....and they arent so computor savy...as i aint either....but every one of them say nope...somethings wrong.
i surely hope not...but who am i to tell all of these old timers they are wrong.
wouldnt have said this....but just read an email from a respected agate collector...he thinks the photos are fake.
he and i...sure hope he is wrong.

Here's a link to Superagates web page, where they are selling Patagonian agates. Mark Boche of Superagates is pretty knowledgable about agates and has been in the agate business for many years, and he gives no indication of any controversy about Patagonian agates. What is it that the agate collector who contacted you doesn't think is right with them? www.superagates.com/cgi-bin/agates.py?atype=patagonian

Cpdad:Hmm that sure seems like an odd statement to me. I've accumulated and cut quite a bit of Condor Agate rough from Patagonia and it looks like authentic naturally occuring material to me. When I bought mine I had huge tables full of material to choose from and nothing about it looked fake. Overall it was interesting and very beautiful material. Much of the rough even has a good patina on the outside from weathering on the surface. It's been on the market for quite a while and this is the first I've heard of anyone saying it was fake. I think the gentleman you've been talking with is very mistaken but as a long time and very serious agate fancier and collector, I'd love the hear about just exactly why he says the Patagonian material is "fake". Doen't make a lick of sense to me!. The statement about someone else would have found the same thing especially seems stupid as one of the great attractions in collecting agate is that the stones from different sites are often very different and experts can often identify location just by looking at the agate. Heck, that's why we collect type specimens, because they are "not" the same *S*....mel

Ricardo and Claudia have been posting at another rock/mineral board (McRocks) for quite some time and I have do doubt that their agates are what the say they are. If you visit their web site you will find that they are the real deal when it comes to agates from all over the world!! www.agatesfromargentina.com/connrock

once again what i said didnt come out right...first of all apologisies pontagonion...i have a habit of writing things that come sounding diff than what i meant..
when they questioned them...they thought they were enhanced....i actually said nope they are not...someone would have seen that already...but they kept insisting the were.
so i told them i would post about it and ask...and let them read it for themselfs.
i think they are the most beautiful rock i have ever seen...i didnt finish of my last sentence...it should have said he and i were arguing about it.
sorry if it sounded any other way to anyone...yaw know i didnt mean the way it sounded.

Wow! I could look at your pics of the agates and collecting areas of Patagonia all day. Beautiful, stark , fierce looking country! There is no doubt in my mind that the statements made about Patagonia agate being fake are totally ridiculous. If an inexperienced collector looked at the variations in the agates coming from Chihuahua, Mexico, they might experience surprise and disbelief but indeed, there are an astounding number of different agate colors and types coming from that one region. The Patagonia region of Argentina is certainly even more extensive and variable. I expect with further exploration, more interesting and wonderful agate varieties will come to light from that area. I still don't understand what would make anyone think your pics are fake. *L* Now when I saw my first Queensland Agates with their wild arrays of neon colors, I was really surprised and somewhat doubtful. Then I saw matrix specimens with several colors variations in the same hunk and I was just in awe. Your Patagonia agate pics are equally awesome. Keep them coming.....mel

I've been looking at the pictures of these wonderful agates and the thought occurred to me that they might be dyed or altered but that's only because they are so unusual in color. I don't think it's unreasonable to question whether they are altered or not but it certainly sounds like they are valid according to the information posted here and also based on the reputation of Patagonianstar. ( I visited the web site as well...they seem like fine folks). CPDad - I can understand your trepidation, especially after the information you received from a 'lifer'.... but I know some old pros that are pleasantly surprised at some of the material I'm finding right in there own backyards! It just goes to show that no matter how long someone has been into the hobby, there is always something new to learn. Dan

CPdad- Enhanced can come to mean so many things- The agates Patagonianstar has shown us are cut and surface polished- so in those terms yes they have been enhanced- but enhancing can also mean colored, heattreated, irradiated, stabilized etc. In those terms NO they are not enhanced. THese wonderful pictures they are sharing are from some of the agates they have up in compition at Tuscon!!!! I think possibly your friends may have some misinformation?

Ya, i would agree no dout. And to be totally honuest, I run into allot of old timers who swear what they know is certain about specific rock types, only to find out the took the frist reponds and didnt listen to anyother. And we all know in the rock world, things like real and fake evole daily.
The only enhancement if any, is done to the photo to lighten up the picture. The color to me look natural giving what ive seen in person over the years. I would stay ive seen them coming to the market for an easy 6 years. And never have i heard a notion of faked agates. Maybe this friend has got that Brazil dyed agate in is head and is thinking that what these are, just done better? Though they are not dyed in anyway, fro what ive seen in person. One does ask that question frist untill you see a piece with rough still on it, and you like nevermind. Cosmic soup is under our feet.

Greetings All,
Both the landscapes and the agates are very beautiful, thank you both for sharing them with us. I gather the two of you have invested much time and effort in building your collection, you've mentioned discarding hundreds of kilograms to get the specimens shown. Do you actually have to cut through that many agates to get the best ones? I'm guessing even many of the "rejects" would be considered worthy material to most of us here. Alas for the cost of shipping!
Oh yes, and the quality of the photography is fantastic.

Ricardo - Let me thank you for having the patience, and taking the time, to "elaborate" on the agate hunting in Argentina.
Your posts have added to this board immensely, and I look forward to seeing a lot more.

I appreciate that CP was willing to share the information from his contacts, just in case it was true (thank goodness it's not though!). I think that's an important aspect of being a member of this group and I count on folks here to steer me away from a bad deal if possible. However, I have no doubt about the veracity of these particular rocks and only wish we could all meet in Argentina to have our own group expidition. Since that's not likely at least we have these terrific photos to look at! Laura

THREE CHEERS FOR RTH.
When I saw Cp's post last night (before any replies) I thought oh shit, here we go again. Another dust up, like we've had too many of lately.
AND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN . . . Makes me feel a lot better tonight. Thanks to all who replied so thoughtfully.

Ricardo, your guys' collection is without a doubt one of the most spectacular I've ever had the pleasure of viewing and the photography is terrific too. Wonderful just wonderful.....mel

CPDad~ Don't be too hard on yourself friend. Like I said before, I don't think that it was unreasonable to ask and ascertain the validity of the material. And please, no one here should stop asking questions!! We all learn from the answers to everyones questions. That's what this board is for! How many of us would have known about the beautiful Patagonian Agates if it wasn't for this board?
And I also want to thank Ricardo and Claudia for the gracious response to the questions raised.
Like Rich pointed out, there was no dust up..all is well. It's funny how the rock issues get worked out real easy but we run into problems discussing religion, politics, etc....
Have a great weekend all! Dan
