During my last visit to New Mexico, my wife and I drove out to Deming, NM. I had heard about the Red Roof Rockshop and Rockhound State Park, so we headed out to check these places out. The shop was closed and we never made it to the park. Instead we stopped at another rock shop on the road to the park and spent a couple of hours there.  The guy running the shop is a little on the weird side and must be pretty lonely because he talked to my wife the whole time while I was looking through the rocks. Everything outside was $2/lb except for one "junk" pile which was 4lbs/$1. I got out of there with 26lbs for $31. Here's some pics of the stuff he had for sale. Geodes and thundereggs the size of basketballs!  That's a regular sized dog food dish.     This was his agate pile  He called this stuff pic jasper, but I think it was banded rhyolite  This is the banded rhyolite I bought.  A few of the agates  I also picked through the junk pile and got a bunch of thunderegg halves and pieces. Overall, a good day. Oh, if you ever make it out to that part of NM, other than the rockshops, there's not much else there to see.  |

You do discover the neatest rock shops! That one huge geode must weigh 40 lbs!

didn't happen to ask if his name was "bill" did you? --I know a guy that lives there at deming and hunts/digs eggs --- I know him from gold panning but have wanted to look him up one of these days too ! He digs some very big eggs -- and built his own saw and flat lap -- think the lap is 36 "  to polish then on |

One that show Finding Cash and Treasure that comes on the Travel Channel, they visited Deming, NM and it is known as thunderegg haven. I wish I had known that when I lived in NM I was only 265 miles from there.

Really neat rocks Ed! Especially like the giant T-Eggs. I was doing some stuff at the Western Foundation for Vertebrate Zoology in Camarillo a few years ago and found out the founder was kind of into rocks at one time. He had some giant eggs from the Deschuttes River Canyon in Oregon that were about 300# or so. Man, you could use them for seats they were so big!.....mel

That looks like so much fun and so warm too. Didn't you buy any unbroken thundereggs? I couldn't stand not too, I love cutting them open to look for the surprise inside. That banded rhyolite you got is beautiful, especially the 2nd in from the top and 2nd in from the bottom. Love the pinks in them.

No that's Taos. The place with the "hum." I think it's somebody hiding a really BIG vibe in an out building.

the wierd guy you met is "the geode kid" and is the owner of the baker rach claim. so of course those are the famous baker ranch thundereggs.
it is a fun stop, was there last spring,
