Been playing with fire again. I think this one is the best one I've come across yet. The pic doesn't do it justice, but there's a nice little pocket of blue in this one.

That looks great!!! I have been grinding away on some pieces trying to find enough fire for a ring. Gotta love fire agate.

Thanks guys. Stephan, I just happen to be at the right place at the right time and bought 4lbs of super nice pieces. They were already windowed by the original owner. They are from Mexico and were dug around 40 years ago. I haven't found a dud yet.

That's awesome Ed!
I've been finding fire agates here and there out in the desert.. saving them up for the day I learn how to cut them. You're an artist with the fire man!!

Ed I've seen the wonderful cabs you've cut up close and those fire agates are amazing - what happens when you go too far and the bubble breaks - has anyone felt the bubbles break? I guess I just wanna see what it looks like

Tweet- When the bubble breaks- I'm guess Ed cries?? Actually I think when you go to far you just get a plain old looking cab

do you still get the color play within the busted bubble?

Tweetie, the bubbles are actually a very thin opaque layer inside the agate. So what happens when you go too far is the top of the bubble gets ground off. Imagine looking down at a plate of tennis balls and in the middle of the plate there's one ball that somebody cut the top off. That's what it looks like when you've gone too far on the fire agates. Under the opaque layer is just either more agate or the host rock so there is no color play.

I know the feeling of losing color. It really disappears fast if you're not being too careful and going slow with it. The Fire Agates I've ground too far look just like an ordinary brown agate...a little boring and heartbreaking. oh yeah, love that Fire there Stoney! Steve
