So I went to Portland and picked up a 30" saw this weekend, boy does it ever need some work. I was looking it over and it seems like if I mount a gas motor on it instead of the electric motor, I can control the speed of the blade easier. Anyone ever done this before? It came with a 2 hp 3 phase motor , but I dont have 3 phase power available. I do have a 1 1/2 hp 230 motor that I could put on it also. I have several different motors I can put on this and I do have a brand new 4 hp gas motor that I think I can just bolt up to it, and it has a variable throttle on it too. The saw came with a used blade and a new blade, theres a picture of them sitting on top of a 55 gallon drum. I stopped into visit my uncle and he had an old tumbler out in the barn that he gave me, its a cool old unit, it needs some work too, but it looks like I can get it to work.

Looks like you have your work 'cut' out for you! You're gonna have fun when you get it all up and running though!! I would try to keep it electric - the price of gas is going up quick!!

Wow that's quite a monster saw! I'm glad to see a resembling between my homemede saw and this one. In my opinion 1 1/2HP, meaning about 1 kW, is not enough for your saw. I would go for the 4 hp engine. But be carefull at the rotation speed corresponding to that power, it might be too big.
As far as I know, the optimum rotation speed of the blade is between 600 and 800 rot/min.
Please post some plate-size slabs when you'll cut them.

Dude, If you get that thing to work I will personally send you a nice chunk of jade to slice from my collection. Good luck, we are all awaiting your results.

Wow... that saw blade is huge! Seems like the clamp isn't big enough..lol. Good luck with the rebuild Cat. I think you will enjoy the project... I bought my saw used and did the rebuild myself.. very satisfying. Can't wait to see that beast up and running!

Catman - That's a cool saw you picked up!!! And it don't look that bad at all.
Use the 1 1/2 horse 230 motor - that's what comes on the Covington 30" saw, which happens to be on sale right now for $6500!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't waste my time with the gas motor.
I like your second pic because it shows how simple and basic the construction of a saw really is: a can with a frame inside to hold the arbor and sliding vise, and a motor. Now tell me a new one is worth 6500 friggin' dollars!
She'll be a beaut cleaned up.

Hey..............Got it runnin today!!!!
Took a torch and cut out the cross vise assembly and welded in a new one made out of much heavier 3/4" grade 8 threaded redi bolt, now the table will move perpendicular to the saw blade as well as parallel. Made a mounting plate for the gas motor and bolted it up, it spins the blade just fine. Put new cables in for the weight feed system, and got all the pulleys to work. Headed to Twin in the morning to get 25 gallons of mineral oil, give her a whirl tomorrow. I will get some pics tomorrow. WOOOHOOOOO!!!!

Hey Catman - Glad you didn't waste your time on that gas motor. Now I'm wonderin' how much of that 25 gallons ends up in the saw. ;D Rich
