Decided to hit the road this weekend with my girls. Did a little rockhounding, river rafting, fly fishing and general exploring. We were in the area of Flaming Gorge and found some really interesting areas to do some future rockhounding. The area is in Wyoming, near Manilla. I found a few nice agates, a rock with some really neat fossils, and this one, which I just had to get posted. It looks just like shark jaws....maybe a pre-historic Pirahna. I know this is probably just how the weather has erroded the agate from the sandstone type rock, but I've never found anything quite like this. Really interesting. I'll try to post a few other of the finds a little later. Thanks fossilman for the explanation. Maybe you can help out with this one to. It has quite a few fossils embedded in it, but it's hard to see them because the rock is black and they blend in very well. this one looks like it will be pretty good An old cabin we just had to explore. My girls hamming up to the camera. Rafting the Green river An overlook of the BridgerValley in Wyoming and the Uintas in the background. Now, which way should I go to find some rocks?? God's Splendor. Steve

That's a lateral cross section of a crinoid stem, or sea lily. It's basically a circular cross section stem of an animal related to starfish and sea urchins. Imagine a starfish with branching arms, put a stem and roots on it, and you got yourself a crinoid.

Great trip! You caught a wonderful sunset pic! The first rock seems to be a crocodile's mouth.
