Hey folks! I'm up here in St Paul enjoying a pretty good conference. Been a little warmer than I expected (90ish), but it's still cooler than the desert.. and oh so green! Yesterday i got the chance to break away for a little while and go Laker hunting down on an old gravel road next to the river. What I found was nothing spectacular, but it was neat to find lakers out in their 'natural habitat' lol. Here's a view from my room Can't wait to get home and play with my new cabber!!! Take care guys, thanks for looking ;D

Brian, Awesome View! At least your able to get out and do a little hunting. I'm sure you're definitely enjoying the cooler weather. I can see one of those pieces that has some nice banding on it. I hope you can hunt a little more while your there...maybe find a gravel pit or something. Be careful. Steve

Hey, is that Cher down there by the river hunting lakers? Nice finds Brian. Man, I don't know how you could finally get your cabber, then leave it home. I would have hauled that sucker to the airport and checked it in as baggage and brought it with me!

Nice finds. In the long run, the Lakers are probably what you will remember most from the conference. -Don

Sweet - pockets full of agates for free! Well done Sir!
I'm learning rapidly - "newbie here", and so Lakers are agates - gotcha. But why are they called Lakers? Are they found around the great lakes area most commonly? Enlightenment is a path strewn with embarassment at ones own ignorance! Please help!

Lakers is a nickname for Lake Superior Agates, primarily found in Minnesota though others that were dragged around by the glaciers have been found in Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and some even as far south as Nebraska. The Lake Superior Agate is Minnesota's state gemstone.

Thanks for the info Cher - I was kinda wondering! Do you find "a lot" of them in your area? I read they have fine banding and distinctive red / yellow colouration. how big do you get them "on the ground"? And thoughts are with the folks involved with the tragedy. F

The size that you have found are the most common. They are also the best for tumbling and cabbing because they generaly have the least fractures. You will find them in sandy gravel around the St.Paul/Minneapolis area. A Laker of about 3-4 ounces showing banding and good color is considered to be an excellent find. The majority of nice agates that I have found are about 1" long.

Thanks for the info - They really are beautiful rocks to have around your area - ideal material for tumbling etc... Wish my plain looking local flints were that pretty!
