If you hadn't told me what it was, this Newbie would have been fooled into thinking it was crazy lace. Just when I think I'm starting to recognize the different agates, somebody goes and confuses me with another set of pretty cabs! Lady B

Prairie-dog chert?!? (roughly translating the French). That's funny, did you make up the name, or is it a local name for the chert? Do the prairie dogs dig it up when they burrow?
The pieces you selected are nice ones, some of them sure do remind me of crazy lace. -Don

Haha. The name comes from it's locality. A google search brings up all kinds of info that is over my head. My buddy and I where collecting at the gravel pit and he yells " Hey Joe! Is this some of that Prairie du-chicken s--t?". Haha So that is what I've been calling it.

rockygibralter i agree...it is hard to pin down an answer on this chert versus agate issue...but i have come to 1 conclusion...in my own little head ;D. here goes....the biggest peice in the first pic....is chert with agate included in it....definetly agate around the druze...typical fortification agate band....not saying bands cant be found in solid chert....i just havent found it yet myself. the peices in the last 2 pics....are much closer to actual chert...without any agate inclusions or fortification bands. i have studied this a little....and have given up on trying to figure it out....even the pros sometimes cant come to an actual conclusion of what actually happened when this was formed. anyway tony....just get some it can be purty stuff....it does pit a lot...i recommend pregrinding to find the flaws first....then tumble. here is a question bob altumura kinda answered for me about this issue. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1169694917&page=1here is the pic of why i even wanted to know anyway...it is a agate fortification band in white chert. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1171069414i dont think any answer...is an answer....just get some...cut it...tumble it....enjoy it...it can be a challenge....a lot of it has fossils it in it also. hard to see...but there is a leaf in the center stone...i dont take good pics...6..7..and 8 oclock......kev.
