Hi, I recall that two or three months back (or thereabouts) , Jack set up a monster-size tumbler. How's that big rig running Jack?

Hi Rollingstone, Hmm yes , that big barrel is still rolling , took a load of rocks out this morning and then went to the beach behind the aluminium smelter where we looked for pet wood. Found none !! But came home very very tired and 2 bags of rocks. I took some pics from the big barrel this morning , but I have a head-ache and won't put them up until tomorrow morning my time haha Good night Jack

Thanks for the update, I look forward to the pics.
Just took a load out today? Wow, I must have been on some sort of mind-link or something!

Goodday all ,
I had a quiet morning , still getting over yesterday haha.
Did my lawns this morning and feeling better now.
I will put the pics up on the picture board.
I have used only one of the steel barrels up till now as I don't have enough oxide for the big barrel yet. I am changing tactics in that I have ordered 2 more 12 pound Lorotne barrels which I will get going on that same frame as the steel barrels. One I will keep for only polishing !!! The other for inbetween grits. The steel barrels for 60/90 grit . I am still feeling my way through in the use of them. Sometimes I find I get too much damage in the load, other times it gets very thick and I hear no more clink clank from the rocks haha. The last load was in it for a whole week , others were taken out after 3 or 4 days already. My old supplier of grits and tumblers died a few days after I ordered more grits and I did not hear about it until a few weeks later. I have run out of 220 and 600 grit . So all I have done lately is 60/90 grit. My new supplier says that I can leave the rocks for 3 weeks in the 60/90 without recharging that way eliminating 220 grit and even 600 grit.
I am planning to try that out in the new 12 pound barrel once it arrives. Another option is to try make up a liner for the steel barrel , using a truck mudflap. I had a look at one yesterday and they are rather thick and stiff to use I feel. I am planning to use a piece of conveyor belt instead. My son has an old one in the implement shed that I can use. Comes off the silage wagon.
According to the lady I went looking for pet wood with yesterday , I should still get a better shine on my stones. I am quite happy as they are but would indeed like a better shine. Once I have my 12 pound barrels I will put the rocks in 600 grit for 2 weeks and then polsih and see what happens. I think polish for 10 days will also help to improve the shine.
Take care and have fun
Jack

Thanks again for the update. Yes, since that barrel is so big and must eat up grit by the multi-pounds, I can see why letting it roll and roll to break the grit down to 600 size would be very appealing. Hope that works for you, definitely worth a try.
Another thing you might want to consider for a liner for the steel barrel is some car floor mats. They are very flexible rubber, about 1/8" thick, might work, an idea anyway.

Hey Jack, If you have any companies near you that do repair work on conveyor belts that would be the place to take those barrels. My father used to work at a place that did conveyor belt repair. One of his friends was into rock tumbling so he took some 5 gallon steel buckets to work and lined them with some of the material they use in belt repair. Worked perfect for him. Just a though, might be a chance to get them lined.

Thanks Rollingstone , Shorty and Cher for your helpful advise. I opened up the second barrel last night , for the first time haha . It has been lined already. The previous owner told me he used that one for polishing only , but when I felt inside it , it felt to gritty that I filled it up with rocks , 60/90 grit and water and let it roll.
Wow , it made no sound whatsoever. Sets me thinking that it won't chew up all that grit in a hurry either and the rocks are more protected . I just have a nagging feeling that I may have loaded it too much. will check later in the day, time for breakfast now.
