This may be petrified bog, or it may just be an extremely weird Jasper. Maybe Mel can tell us, or if anyone else has an idea, please jump in there. The colors are fairly close. Thanks! Curt

No help here - but really cool lines - almost gives it the look of movement.

Looking just at the sections I vote for jasper, but maybe the natural surface leads to the idea it's bog. Anyway, amazing patterns and colors. Oh, and what's in that close up, a seeding? Maybe you'll have soon a whole tree like that! Adrian

Curt: Boy, if that were from California, I'd be tempted to say it's Lavic Jasper. Since it's not though, I'd call it some kind of banded chert since such flow lines are a characteristic of chert. Really an oddball piece though. pretty neat!....Mel

Well, blow me away Mel. I've always thought of chert as ugly gray stuff with ocassional interesting bands. We have only sedimentary rocks where I'm hunting.
If someone has more colored chert, I would be very interested in seeing pics.....Pleeeeze.
Thanks!

In the second picture the vug has what looks like the end of a tube surfacing, that was gonna be my first guess is some sort of a tubular agate, is that possible Mel?

Curt: Years ago "chert" was the term used to describe any dull colored jasper like material. Folks would say "Ah that's just an old hunk of chert". Now though, chert is defined as a microcrystalline silica mineral often of marine sedimentary origin. Basically very much like flint. Now origin rather than color is important and many quality cherts are actually quite beautiful ie. Many of the poppy jasper types like Morgan Hill and Hornitos are said by most scientists to be chert of marine ooze origin. The beautiful Prairie agate of South Dakota is a chert nodule as are bubblegum agate, and oolitic agate from the same location as these are all in limestone of marine origin. I guess you'd say Fairburns, Dryhead and Teepee Canyons which are sedimentary nodules may have got their start as chert nodules in limestone too. So you see,'"chert" is no longer a bad name. It can be quite pretty....Mel

Mel
I feel another headache coming on. :-)
There are so many different names that can apply to the same darn thing. An agate can be a chert. Somebody help me up off the floor. Wouldn't it be easier just to call it all Silica? You got your Dead Horse Silica, Smashed Armardilo Silica, Up The Creek Silica........
So why would one agate be a chert and not another one? I know, I'm dense as tumbler slurry, but humor me, if you will.

*L* Man Curt, you are opening such a can of worms. Agate is supposed to mean a microcrystaline silica ( chalcedony ) specimen that has parallel or concentric banding. Here as with the term 'jasper", unfortunately, all the common names and trade names etc have messed up the field. Therefore all the moss agate and plume agate etc are probably more technically included chalcedony not agate or even jasper-agate which is translucent chalcedony mixed with non translucent jasper. Botswanas, Brazilians, Lagune Dryheads etc. woud be true agates. Now we separate banded agate from moss agate etc. It all gets real complicated especially since lots of things called jasper are actually rhyolite, silicified sediments etc.
Basically: Cryptocrystalline ( microcrystalline) quartz can be divided by;
Marine: Flint, chert, if parallel banded, Sedimentary agate ( Dryhead, Fairburn, Kentucky, Teepee, Union Road)
Volcanic origin: ( gas pockets or veins in basalt or andesite etc): Bots, Lakers, Queensland, Montana, Laguna , Jasper etc.
Then you just have to remember orgin first, then common name classification.
For example you can have pet wood that is agatized ( translucent or partially so) or jasperized: opaque but it's not chert or flint because most wood at least was replaced by silica from overlaying or surrounding beds of volcanic ash.
Thundereggs are not chert because they're from volcanic perlite, ash or tuff beds.
If your in old sedimentary ocean bottom territory most everything silicified is chert or flint where the silica came from the skeletons of radiolarians, sponges etc or from washed in volcanic ash, but mainly this material is associated with limestone like rocks. It goes on and on and everyone has an opinion. You can read on this subject forever *L*.
In the west we had lots of volcanos and volcanic ash so we have lots of gas pocket nodules, t-eggs and jaspers except: Where ocean sediments are exposed and we have Franciscan Formation cherts like Poppy Jasper and Stone Canyon Jasper. *sigh*
OK now I have a headache *L*....Mel

also curt...the electricals were probably involved also....ya see....back then there wasnt any tin foil or batteries for protection from the electricals....so the little cherts and agates...couldnt have made little hats and stuff for protection...and the electricals knew this.
so they decided to gather up a bunch of cherts and agates....mix them up in a big electrical cooking bowl....and throw them all about.....some landed in california....some ohio....some here in georgia...all over the world they landed.
now the cherts and agates have little tinfoil hats and batteries...and the electricals have left them alone....so folks like mel...can figure out what the electrials did to them.
ya see...the electricals can be spirited little things....and they really know how to mess with us humans...they mess with all kinda things....why did they screw with the chert and agate....i dont know....but i think they did ;D...kev.

It is a fossilized Electricals nest. A very rare find, don't tell anyone about it, the authorities will hunt you down and make you watch CNN. You will be forced to watch CNN for days at a time, with your eyelids held open like on Clockwork Orange. Quickly, make a tinfoil hat, get into the basement, and quietly yell Glowakus, Glowakus, Glowakus. If the wife takes notice, eat three alkaseltzers and do some foaming. They understand better that way.

ROFL Kev, those durn Electricals messed with everything!
Doc, Oh no, not CNN! What morbid inhumane creatures could do such a thing to a person? Glowakus, Glowakus, foaming, foaming.

I found a location the Electricals originally came from. beyondtheblog.wordpress.com/2007/08/15/saucer-recovery/When they crashed, the original Electricals transformed. The stone you found is evidence of their nest. They have created a tapeworm to add to their dirty deeds. The Tanea Saginata! Normally, the Tanea Saginata only digests its host through time. The ones the Electricals created, take their scolex and incorporate into the neural system. We are talking total mind control here! They bore through the stomache lining and the hooks from the scolex pull out nerves. From there they control the host through cravings, and burning desires. You have the proof! The Electricals are here. I spoke to my son, who remarried. I was concerned about the integridey of his new wife. I advised him to take a simple test on her. I told him to let her take a nap, keep all the lights out. I told him to get a very powerful flashlight, a pair of long needle nose pliers. Then quietly move up on her with the lights out. Immediately snap on the flashlight, shove it up to her nose, yell loudly, and put the needle nose pliers into her nose and look for the dark spot showing through the light. That is the chip. I told him to grab it and pull, hard. I explained that she will get over the shock when she finds out the full impact of the Electricals. I do not know what finally happened, as he has not spoken to me in some time. He doesn't answer his e-mails. I think he is still mad at me for thinking his wife is an amputee. I had no idea that people get on their knees in family photos. It makes sense though. She sure looked short in the photo. He is a bank manager in the loan department. Stuffy and all. Us regular people are not up to his level. I would hate to think his wife has chips in her teeth and will have to have her teeth amputated. I am glad she is not an amputee. I did not think it was a stupid thing to say, she was real short. Real short. It did not make sense, being that short and normal looking, big hair and everything. He should have told me he is not with a Wee person. I hope he got the Chip in her nose and did not miss. Most people do not get a second chance at that. It is too awkward when they are awake. He tried the alkaseltzer gig with her, and she clocked him upside the head. I would have loved to hear the conversation with them explaining that to the EMTs that came when she called 911. Now I know why there is a credit crunch going on. They run the whole show. We are doomed.
