We used to celebrate this all the time when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories. If we didn't have gale force winds blowing, I might be tempted to start a bonfire in honor of old Guy.

Hey K.D.,
I grew up in the western part of the country ... and to the best of my knowledge ... we never celebrated this day.
Could you please fill me in on the meaning of this celebrated day?
Thank you,
Un-informed westerner ;D

That crazy englishman Guy Fawkes......pardon my FRENCH.....tried to blow up or burn down the british parliament.
They celebrate a criminal....or perhaps it was a good thing haha.
as for fireworks, Yes they do use them in New Zealand too on november 5 ( last night) .
In my younger days we did not have this guy fawkes , we had firecrackers and the like on New Year's Eve to chase away the old year.... In the Netherlands.
The Swiss and the French both have firecracker celebrations in July. I just don't remember the date of the Swiss, but we were there at the time to celebrate my wife and her sister's 50th birthday. Only sad note was that her sister died a month before.
Take care
Jack

The French celebrate Bastille Day i think July14th or 16th....don't know what the Swiss celebrate.
yep, a long time ago Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of Parliment (in England) but he got ratted out and they got him before he could do the deed. originally, they used to celebrate the fact that they'd caught him, now i think the British celebrate that someone had the cohones to try!!
i never celebrated it either until i married a Brit, so don't feel bad all you guys who didn't know. we used to have huge parties and let off fireworks in years gone by. glad we aren't doing that tonight, it is wet and cold and miserable here today!
anywya, hope y'all had a good day anyway!

geez...didn't any of you burn a guy? We always had a straw man to throw on a bonfire. Hmmmm in retrospect maybe it's just as good we don't celebrate it.
