I just got back from working in Kentucky . I was able to do a little Geode hunting while I was there. I found a creek bed loaded with Geodes I picked these up in about 45 min. These got broke on the way home. They were from egg to football size Heres what I brought home Quite a few of them rattle when you shake them. I want to thank the RTH members for giving me some ideas on where to look. Keith

Keith, looks like you're gonna have some real purty stuff inside. Be sure to keep us updated with pics of what you find inside.
I'm gonna have to add Kentucky to my list now. Geodes are a particular favorite of my hubby and myself.

Great Geode Master Keith, Looks like you hit a nice jackpot there. I hope you find lots of great suprises in each one. One question for anyone who can answer it. I've seen the Kentucky Geodes that are filled with Agate and really great colors and patterns. How common are these? and are they found in a certain area in Kentucky? I have wanted to get my hands on a few of these when I see them on e-bay, but usually the prices get too rich for me. Have fun with the Geodes. Steve

Great haul. You have some cool surprises ahead of you! Have fun. SurPRIZES? Did someone say SurPRIZES? Is there going to be a contest so someone can win one of these really neat SurPRIZES?Where is the river bed? ( Shh, don't say it outloud. I don't want everybody else to get there before me!) What a fantastic haul and what a great way to spend 45 minutes!!! Enjoy!! Enjoy!! Lady B...

Steve from what I have heard the Agate filled ones are hard to come by. I have been looking on Ebay also and I guess I will keep on looking . I hope I have some in my haul . It makes cutting them even more fun not knowing. I found these outside of Crab Orchard Ky. I stopped at a creek crossing on a back road and was shocked at the amount of Geodes there was. I went to the house close to the creek and knocked on the door to get permission to hunt and this little old lady about 80 answered the door looking at me with suspicion. I introduced myself and told her I was a rock hound and asked her about collecting in the creek. She opened the door and smiled and said in a voice like she was talking to her kids " YES YOUNG MAN YOU CAN GO GET YOU SOME ROCKS" . I thought I was going to crack up. I know she thought I was a little off to be picking up rocks in 100 degree heat . I was able to back my truck down into the dry creek bed and pick them up. Keith

Nice haul Keith! I've not had much luck with geodes myself - tend to just get crumbly stuff - almost like sand in some of them. The famed Ky agate is only found in about 4 counties I believe - almost all of which is on private property and increasingly rarely found from what I hear. I've not ventured out on my own to find these as a few people have voiced their concern with me just randomly driving around out in eastern Ky knocking on doors by myself. I guess it's what the world has come to...? I have just recently caught wind of a rockhounding group in this area though and may try to hook up with them for one of their outings.
I've been watching those agates on ebay myself - quite pricey but soo beautiful. I'd love to find just a hint of that myself. Keep us posted on what you find in yours - I'd love to see!

Keith and onewomanarmy, Thanks for the info. I hope you post some pics of your cuts....I'd like to see your finds. It's great when you find folks that will allow you to hunt on their property....I wish more people were like that. And it doesn't suprise me that the prized geodes are found mostly on private lands. It's amazing how much some of them go for on e-bay...especially the more rare ones; from memory....the black and red ones. Steve

Hey Keith! You can find those kind of geodes in just about every creek and river in Ky.I`ve found them every place that i`ve looked at and i haven`t found anything worth while yet. However there are a few counties that are good prospects i know Lincoln Co.[where i live] Estill Co,Rockcastle Co. have possible agate geodes, but a lot of places are on private property especially the creeks you might ask the landowner if you can rock hunt,I obtained county maps from the state that shows all the rivers and creeks for the county that you want, also there`s a website=Kentucky Agates .com,you can get a lot if info. from them also,Good luck on your rockhunting in Ky............Rocky

Great haul! I've also looked with envy at some of the pics of Kentucky Agate. A couple of the agate websites have pics of spectacular finds. Never see them out here at shows at all but the colors are pretty terrific. Hope some of yours have agate and if they do, please post those pics but shoot, even the crystal ones are pretty darn neat!.....Mel
