Hey y'all,
I was in Oakland a couple weeks ago and had the pleasure of driving down to San Jose and meeting Ed (Stoner). It was a last-minute schedule change that made it possible, so Ed was unable to go rockhounding. However, he gave me directions to a favored spot at Anderson Dam. I collected some greenish jaspers, some pretty serpentine and a few agates or almost-completed agates (I expect to find some of them to be just surface bits o'agate).
Afterward, I went to Ed's new home and visited with him for a couple hours, getting a first-hand look at so many of the beautiful cabs he has shown on the board. He even gifted me with a few, which I will post later. He also promised to send me a flat-rater of rocks from his collection, which in the best tradition of rockhounds, sprawls a bit around his house.
Well, the box arrived this week. It took me 30 minutes at least just to open the box and take everything out. The man packs a mean box. And it was full of beautiful rough, including a few poppies, some neat Morgan Hill finds and a nice hunk of white opalized pet wood (from that monstrous 700-lb. purchase he made last year). It is fantastic stuff. And I cannot wait for the heat to ease up a bit so I can start cutting and polishing.
Ed, thanks again for the visit, the great conversation and tips and for the wonderful gift.
So everyone can enjoy it vicariously, he's some of the stuff he sent. UPDATE: I goofed. I thought the thumbnails were clickable. Since they weren't, I replaced them with regular size pix. Sorry dialuppers.
A round of opalized wood
My first thunderegg and some nice blues
Couple pieces of boulder opal (on a bed of serpentine)
A Brazilian and friends
Did someone say poppies?
A couple closeups of faves:
