Howdy folks! Spent the day cutting a few cabs, and among them I worked a little Rainbow Fluorite I picked up last month. First time with it.. a bit softer than I had anticipated, but once I got the feel for it things were moving along just fine. Then came the 14k diamond on leather. Apparently either pressure or heat (or the combination of the two) does not agree with fluorite, as I sat and watched fractures pop out of nowhere! It was a bit of a downer but I chalked it up to a learning experience.. heh Ya live 'n ya learn The other cabs I cut today can be seen here: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=ccabs&action=display&thread=1188608126Thanks for looking!

I really like this, despite the fractures. Purple is my favorite color and I really like the little wavy bands.

Beautiful cab, Brian. The fractures seem to add character rather than take away beauty. Fractured Cab of Stone
You worked so hard to shape me Some would say discard the fractured stone But I am beauty in my own right For I show that to be loved One only has to Be Lady B

Brian thats the finest flourite I've seen in years!!! Its such a gorgeous material, soft, awkward cleave planes, tempremental to polish, and at the final moment it goes all flakey, it's enough to drive you mad, but then you remember the sheer beauty of the ragged bandings, and gentle gradients. Wonderful... Now - a), Where does that stuff come from? It's fabulous and I'd love to know. b), What colours does it come in? The purple is stunning, but I'm really curious what other tones you can find. Why? Well. I'm a Norfolk UK resident - moved here about 8 years ago, but I'm Derbyshire born and bred, and "back home" we have a very special mine claim. I'm certain the local stone "Blue John" a form of flourite with blue/purple banding very very similar to the example your displaying was described as unique to Derbyshire, the Romans came to our hills to mine lead and this particular gemstone. As a rock fan I simply can't get the Blue - the mine produces very little material now, and the prices would make a grown man cry!!! But back in the day it was worked by the locals in to some amazingly beautiful stone work. Check out this link for a look at our very special caves - if you like fairytale caves - this is well worth a look. Thanks so much for showing this stone to us, I'm intrigued and awed by such a gorgeous stone, bad luck on how you felt it went, but stick with it, because I cant wait to see some more of this stuff polished up. Brilliant A websearch for Blue John will show hundreds of examples - but the cave I liked most in the cluster (theres 6 or 7 in the same town) was this one www.speedwellcavern.co.uk/ but www.castleton-rocks.com/ shows some of the other caves and also has a link back here !!!!! RTH Rocks!!!! LadyB - How do you manage to write so many lovely poems? I had to try really hard for even 1! You can go off people you know Chuckle Chortle Cheers All, Harry

LadyB - How do you manage to write so many lovely poems? I had to try really hard for even 1! You can go off people you know Chuckle Chortle Cheers All, Harry Ah Harry, I am ONE with the stones. (It's in the signature box in each of my posts. And Mother Earth spoke to me about her children and Lo! there were the rocks and minerals, the geodes and thundereggs, the crystals and agates. And I clasped them close to my heart. And Mother Earth smiled and welcomed me into her family. And I played with all the children in joy and peace forever as we all tumbled about. ) Thanks for the neat link. Just love travelling (virtually) to new places. The other side of the pond has such wonderful history to go along with its stones! Lady B

Thanks everyone! Whatta nice poem Lady B Harry I'm not sure where the rainbow stuff comes from. I know there's deposits of fluorite out here in AZ near Bouse, I believe it's straight purple stuff though. I have a chunk of green fluorite as well. Not sure how many other hues it can be found in.
