Wow Stefan! Looks like you are off to a great start! Learning the technique and skills is hard, but soon your points will get better and better. Face flaking is the hardest for me - I never know where and when to stop and end up breaking a lot of my points into pieces. Hang in there and practice alot!

Very cool indeed. Knapping looks hard.... I'm pretty good at napping though, so I think I'll stick with that. ;D -Don

Excellent work Stefan, those are some great flint heads, very well done. Are you knapping with steel, bone, antler, wood or stone hammers? That's some very impressive knapping eitherway, kudos to you Sir. The material looks a little granular in the first example - did this cause any problems? Reworking of the faces is always a tricky part, and the point at which you stop is often difficult to define, I've found neolithic arrow heads which have been less than 3mm thick, ripple flaked on both sides and just perfect in their form. Just works of art to me In my experience the best plan of action is percussive flaking to preform the head against the parent stone, a single confident flake to remove the preform, and then pressure flaking the flake to pair down the material to the finished item. I will only use an antler tine for this purpose, to my mind it's the only tool for the job. Keep up the good work and no knapping on the job H

Harry- Right now I have a very nice quartzite hammerstone (just perfect- soft enough to "grab the platform" but hard enough to stay intact) I'm also using a copper bopper- and a copper flaker- I've started making a few of my own tools- some soft steel flakers (my daughter love using the steel--it works better in her small hands- and she only flakes on real thin preforms) and I'm making my own ishi (sp) stick- soft steel at one end- copper at the other- this spring I'm gonna hit the woods early to find some antler sheds- I have DC waldorfs book on Flintknapping and he tells how to make your own flakers and billets form sheds-- Most of the guys I talked to recommended Copper for begining flakers- (course they ALL used antler) so I went with the copper-

Cool that's the first time I've ever seen a multicolored one! I bet the very first ones didn,t have a price marked on them! they look authentic - anyone ever "use" one to cut stuff?
