I headed out last Sunday for a week long work related regional meeting in Las Cruces New Mexico. It was a good 6 1/2 hour drive from Phoenix, and as I had my boss along I didn't get much opportunity to stop and hound along the way I did however get the chance to go out a couple of evenings while I was there and look around. Thanks to Mary Ann, I had directions to one area just east of town in the hills and I spent a good hour or so out there one evening looking around. Two nights later I headed out north of town around Radium Springs and found a few things, among them a very cute little desert tortoise! And some nice scenery Here's what I brought back My first tailgate shot in a while. Quality over quantity.. or something like that Some nice little pet woods and moss agates Some jaspers and other finds Some neat rocks with layers and 'swirleys' Plus a granite slab I found along side the road It was nice to spend a few hours out in hills there. The weather was perfect, and though I had my snake eyes on I didn't run across a single rattler! Well that's it.. thanks a bunch for lookin!

Great haul Brian! Some of those almost look like Prairie Agate. Great turtle pic too. Rather than being a tortoise, what you have there is an Ornate Box Turtle, a very cool little beastie. We've had an established colony of transplanted Three Toed Box turtles in our yard for about 30 years. Rescued them from a pet store. They lay eggs and have babies and everything and have become so tame *L*. Always follow me around the yard begging for food!.....Mel

Wow, looks like Maryann found some new hunting grounds since I was down there. She thought she was a rockhound...until she met me! All it took was one day out showing her what agates and jaspers look like and she was hooked. Last I talked to her she had a couple of saws, multiple tumblers, and I think she was working on a grinder. Glad she was able to help you out Brian.

Wow, thanks for the pics. The turtle is cool, great haul, and New Mexico, they named it right when they call it the " Land of Enchantment". I spent a week there in the mid 80's and dreamed of one day retiring and moving there. Daniel

Yeppers. New Mexico is the best!
Glad you saw turtles instead of snakes, Brian. Last time I was in that part of the state I reached for an agate that was hidden under a tumbleweed, and the biggest rattler I've ever seen was coiled up right next to it. I'm so glad he gave me a warning....needless to say, I let him keep his agate.

Brian, Glad you were able to go out and enjoy the New Mexico rocks. Looks like you even found some nice stuff. I think that Turtle is really neat! Nothing better than being able to spend any amount of time in the outdoors rockhounding. Steve

Brian - Great work! I found a few lace agates out there Saturday plus some other stuff. Yours looked awesome though! Am so glad you found some good stuff. I just recently started going out to Radium Springs and have really enjoyed it. Well done - looking forward to the 'finished' stuff. Thanks for the Tortise too - cool! MA
