That Chrysantemum rhyolite has such an interesting pattern! The imperials are also beautiful.
But you saved the best for last! What beautiful wooden pieces! And what a polish! How big is your tumbler that allows you to polish rocks this size?

Beautiful work. I'm confoozed about some of the ID key -- what's the white with opal looking in it? And the one on the left in the first photo and later close up, that has the black lines and red areas in it? I love my loto twin tumbler. Obviously you started off well with it, using stones that you had shaped well with your rotary tumbler. My biggest mistake with the loto is putting rocks in it too soon when they should have been in the barrels longer. But I'll say in my defense, I keep everything running 24/7 and it takes a lot of rocks to keep the loto fed. That puppy is FAST!

Hi Adrian, here's a few pics of my tumbler: The rubber tumbler barrel measures about 14cm diameter by 13 cm deep. The opening at the top is 65mm across and the instructions say you can tumble anything that will fit through the opening. I've got a fantastic piece about three times bigger from the same locality but I won't be able to tumble it until I can afford to get an even bigger tumbler.

Hi Puppie, sorry I should have made things a bit more clear..... the two long triangular pieces (white , dull purple and grey) are Royal Imperial jasper; the half-circle white and orange piece is from the Okahukura Peninsula...... locally it is called "Port Albert concretions" but as far as I'm concerned this stuff is a form of jasper and is very similar to the Royal imperial jasper from Mexico. The colours are mainly orange and white but can be almost any colour and usually in pastel shades. I will post more pics later on as I get more of this stuff polished. As for the other piece with the black lines and red areas... I think it is a combination of chert and jasper. The black areas are fractures that have been penetrated by something like manganese or perhaps black iron oxide. It is rare and quite attractive when polished. Like you, I think the tumbler is great.... I also made the mistake of chucking in realy rough stuff too soon. These days I still use the rotary tumbler with rough material on 100 grit for a week or two before putting it in the Lot-O- tumber.

Hi pporky, no they are not fossils. The rhyolite which is a high-temperature lava, forms radiating mineral growths as it cools... they look like flowers or snowflakes.

That chrysanthum rock is realy interesting a delicate design.

Nice rocks, different looking from anything I've seen here in the US. That chrysanthymum has a great pattern. Those two banded pieces look sweet also.

G'day Petroglyph, that rhyolite is atonishing. I love the flowery, snowflakey patterning. I guess the pattern explains the name! That pet wood is sweet too. I love the natural shape with the sensational shine. Did you order your lot-o from the USA or is there a supplier in NZ?

Hi Jack, I will be doing a lot more work with rhyolite soon so experimentation is in order. I will try doing a batch with just rhyolite and nothing else. I should probably use a 1000 grit pre-polish too (which I will probably have to import).
Hi Mike, I had to import the Lot-O tumbler from the states..... nobody here stocks them unfortunately.

Thanks guys. I have checked it all out with the Rock Shed previously. I guess I was just trying to see if I could get it from closer to home and reduce postage costs. I am also concerned about the cost of spare parts etc. when the need arises.
Jack, we're on 240 volts as well. There's some useless trivia for you.
