Gosh I hate spiders!!! When I was down in Arizona and went out rockhuntin' with Jamie...we stumbled on one on our way back to the vehicle. It was dark, and she spotted him right off. I probably would have passed out or went running off screamin' like a little girl if I'd have seen it. Steve

Very cool! We have so many of those up in the gold country that one of the towns has a Spider Days festival with spider races etc. Lots of the males crawling about in the fall. The males are gentle but the females which remain in the burrows, are bigger and nastier biting vigorously if provoked. Males must approach them with caution as I've seen the females pop up from a hole and kill and eat the males a couple of times. Also cool to see the big spider wasps hunt and kill the spiders after which they drag the home to the burrow to feed their larvae. Once found a dead wasp in a paralyzed spiders jaws. That fight was a draw!....Mel

Yip that does fit in with Halloween. Looks like the lab pet spiders I used to feed when I was in college. Tami

I am one of the weird ones, I guess, because I LOVE spiders. I think they are magnificent creatures. We used to have webs that would get spun every evening and reabsorbed every morning at our home on the east coast side of Florida. What made them so incredible was that each web was a minimum of 7 feet in diameter! They glistened with dew in the lamplight along the path to our house and amongst the trees. And not a single one was ever spun ACROSS the path.
I also used to catch spiders in a glass and help them find their way back outdoors. Several times I found mothers with about fifty or so babies riding on the mom's back!
While many people are afraid or revolted by spiders, these fascinating creatures serve many wonderful purposes, not the least of which was saving the lives of our soldiers in Viet Nam. The silk from the webs of certain species could be packed into wounds to fight jungle rot until the wounded soldiers could be medically evacuated to Japan, the Philippines, or the states. I'm not certain how many of our soldiers knew what was being used to pack the wounds, but I have a very special place in my heart for spiders.
If we treat them with respect, they can be very helpful little co-inhabitants of the planet.
Thanks for the photo. It's a neat one!

LadyB...Thanks for trying to convince me I should play with them and love them as my own children...it will NEVER happen! The only purplose I like them for, is they eat the little bugs. I would love to see you wake up with that little old spider crawling up your neck...eeeeeks! Steve

I think this year, my home is home for all the wayward spiders in the area, what's up with that! But, none are as big as THAT one! What do those eat, mice? Here's an interesting 'fact': www.snopes.com/science/stats/spiders.asp
