Ok , here's an odd specimen to explain. In these slabs of Mexican Imperial Jasper there are veins going one direction and superimposed orb/egg patterns going the other. Wonder how the heck that occurs in nature? Don't make a lick of sense to me but sure is pretty stuff!.....Mel

The bands are layers of formation. The other pattern was a latter phenomenon, most likely a heated liquid chemical event which caused permeation.

That's really pretty. I've seen some other slabs that have a similar effect but none that were that pronounced.

Michaeljohn's explanation seems logical.
Mel - The experts often wonder how the heck stuff forms too. Look how long they've been debating various agate theories.
And here's Bob Jones in the latest Rock and Gem, about Mexico's New Scenic Jasper: "I could not even suggest how Scenic jasper formed because the curving bands, circular patterns, and sharply interrupted layers are not readily explained."

Michaeljohn: That certainly seems a reasonable explanation. It's always just so hard to wrap my mind around these hard rocks being in a fluid state and having all those unusual patterns develop at various stages of rock maturity *L*.
Rich: I hear you. I just read that Bob Jones article this afternoon *L*.....Mel
