Howdy folks, Well, Randy wanted some more pics so here are a few works in progress and three small slabs of Stinky Horse Hole Jasper I cut yesterday. Thanks for looking.....Mel Stinky Horse Hole Jasper: African Queen Picture Jasper. Getting scarce now as China buys all the good stuff but this one of my favorite materials. More picture jasper Owyhee on top, McDermitt below: Some fossils getting ready for grinding and dopping then going into my fossil gems colection: Top left: Turritella from Wamsutter, WY. Right: Coquina or Point Mugu Shell Rock from down by Malibu. Bottom: Texas Golden Horn Coral and Utah Black Horn Coral. Misc stuff: Top left to right: Banded Serpentized Marble from Texas, Purple Jadeite from Turkey, and Dendritic Jade from the Janoco Jade Mine at Porterville, CA. Bottom left: Boar Canyon Jasper ( much greener than pic) and Orbicular Rhyolite from the Mojave.

The African Queen Picture Jasper is awesome. I have seen slabs before, but not anything near as nice as that.

Wow Mel that is an incredible variety of material. I got to say that I love that McDermitt, as Adrian noted it looks like a tornado.

Preforming and cabbing that Turritella must be nerve wracking when no matter how you do it you know you are going to be cutting away some nice fossil shells in the process. I'm still working on preforming my first calibrated 18x25 cab of Mooka Jasper in preparation for when I actually have the means to finish it and already i'm having issues with cutting away nice patterns in the material for the sake of showcasing the converging pattern in the center of the cab. I sure hope you're keeping and tumbling those saw trimmings!

Lcars: The Turritella is very problematic. This will be about my fourth attempt to get a good cab for my fossil gem collection. It seems either you lose the best shell patterns to the grinding wheel or the darn things have a hidden pit or crack that gives away. Last one I cut came out totally awesome and when I removed it from the dop, it cracked in two pieces right down the middle. Crack didn't even show on the surface either! Think if this one looks iffy, I'll do it as a cushion cut and leave it pretty flat topped. That way it'll be thicker, stronger and still retain the nice shell designs....Mel

"Stinky Horse Hole Jasper" ... part of me is curious about the origin of the name, but another part of me says that I probably don't really want to know. Cool looking stuff, though!

Michaeljohn: Not a complicated naming story, Neighboring ranch took advantage of our nice jasper pit as a place to dump a dead horse which was a long time getting eaten and decomposing. Took a good deal of breath control to dig that jasper for awhile * PEE EUGH!* Hence the colorful name....Mel

Harley: Bought several pieces of that black horn coral at Quartzite several years ago. Was said to come from near the same area that the red does near Heber, Utah. Guy said they found a whole bunch in some cuts in a ravine. Looks to be a bit softer inside than on the outside and the pointy end is really nicely agatized and polished out well in a specimen.....Mel
