I found this today at a construction site that I'm working on, we were grading a parking lot to be paved next week and I found this laying in the dirt. It's definately glass, but seems to be heavier than obsidian (which we don't have in Virginia as far as I know of). The only thing that I can think of because of the area that we're in is that maybe slag glass from the colonies?? Any thoughts?

Obsidian? Or even glass? Do you have any glass factory inthe area? I found some weird patterned glass chunks in the vicinity of one of those.

Hi Randy, That could be a piece of slag from a foundry.
A lot of time the sand that's used for the molds,(which are called cores) gets melted and forms slag glass just like your photo shows. It hard to tell from a photo but I picked up a lot of it when they shut the foundry down where I worked. The reason it feels heavier is because it probably canting iron or steel in the glass itself.
Try putting a good magnet next to it and see what reaction you get.

Connrock- funny, I had thought of that and tried it yesterday but the magnet didn't stick. It's a solid black rock, and very shiney where the edge is chipped.

Hmmm .. Guess I was the only one wishing it was a Hella size meteor. Still why not not just keep it and tumble it for the sake of it.? ;D or is it too breakable? either way still kinda cool .. ;D Thx for the extra pics. .you rock! Roxy

It seems to be a fairly strong, dense material. It would probably hold up just fine in a tumbler but I kinda think it's cool, and I already have 60 pounds of obsidian and some really cool glass that "horseinaround" sent me. In fact, some of it I started in the rotary about an hour ago.

Funny, it's my favorite color too (honest). I'm slabbing an 11 pound chunk of black agate right now. Also, black looks so cool on hotrods and Harleys. I once had a black 47 Chevy, I loved that car. It's definately a keeper. Also, it's the first rock that I've "ever" actually found that had any value to this hobby. All of my rough comes from ebay, the local rock shop, the petstore, and board members. (all of my best stuff is from board members)

No kidding? Hmmm not everyday I meet someone with the same idea of a bad ass color.. ;D.. I used to have a charcoal black Ford Mustang GT it was an 04..and then traded it off for a Black Subaru WRX .. with a Wicked spoiler on the back.. anyways sorry for getting off the subject..of Rock.. Anyways.. My first rock was also Black and not of real value was a Apache tear.. and what was so cool I thought was cuz it was just black.. and very smooth.. and then one day i held it up to the light and that sucker was see through.. I was hooked since..lol. and of course met my friend who turned me into a rock monster.. and most of the stuff I've collected with any value.. is from her .. and a few gifts from that RTH thing at Burro creek. other wise I guess most of my collection consisted of Leverites..and Shyt rock.. LOL Well I can't wait to see your finished polished obsidians.. and I'm curious to know if you think you'll polish that one up or just leave it as is.. Roxy

I'm pretty sure that I'll leave this one alone. I'm 95% sure that it's from an old foundry from the civil war era. Here's my old 47 Chevy.......
